Debbi,

I have a friend who is REALLLLL Country too. She and her Dh laugh at me too!

They didn't get the chicken saddle thing at all. However, when I go to first - - - - I do point out that my hens aren't naked and rough looking AND that the hens would be so much happier with a saddle to cushion the roos riding. . . . She is real crafty . . . . . so I pointed out with just a few scraps from all her material she could make a TON of chicken saddles.

She hasn't done it yet, BUT I got a feeling those hens with be styling with the rest of us soon!

Canning isn't to hard, I recommend getting the "Ball Book of Canning" as it is a helpful guide, my parents gave me all the jars they had since my mom doesn't do this anymore. A good friend of mine walked me through making jams and jellys and I went from there. I don't use the pressure cooker but I know you can do meat with it

My sis and I kind of do the "chicken thing" together. When I moved I gave her all my show birds as well as all my othe chickens because I had no place for them. Now we swap back and forth.

As for canning, it's not too hard. Just don't take short cuts. Start out kind of small, such as one canner full at a time. I've done a lot in the past, but not so much lately. Once I get my garden going I will do more. Last fall my two sisters and I got together and made jams and jellies. We had a sister's weekend, had a great time and ended up with over 150 jars of sand plum, chokecherry, grape, cherry, peach-sandplum jelly and jams. We hope to be able to do it again this year. It doesn't help that the 3 of us are in the far corners of Kansas... NE, SE, and SW.

My mother n law just saw the type of eggs Im hatching out next and was in love with the eggs and the cute chicks. She has know decided instead of me hatching out there barred rocks and RIR she wants me to hatch her out some marans for herself. I guess all the clean legged chicks next time go to her and any hen that doesn't make my cut lol. She is older and set in her ways so I was surprised when she wanted them instead. She the type of person a chicken is a chicken but must lay brown eggs.
