Hi Vicki, Glad you are feeling better and back! With this crazy weather we're all having, it's a wonder that all of us don't have pnuemonia! We had a light frost here this morning!

Glad I held back on my temptation to plant the tomatoes and peppers. The old adage here is; "thunder in February, frost in May". It's never been wrong since I've lived here either. Nice weather starting today, with one more possible night of frost, then onto the 70-80s!

Nice that you are having a great hatch! I'm trying somethind drastically different with the eggs in the bator now. Dropped the humidity to 25 for the first 18 days. Since they are my own eggs, I figured I could afford the test. Sure can't be any worse than all of my previous hatches, and it just may work for me.

These are due to hatch on the 14th, so wish me luck.

Hi y'all,

I am coming back here just to introduce myself. I am Quailladyoffortmyers and a breeder in Fort Myers. I am starting my flock of Marans in LF and Bantam in French.
I have been working on Cuckoos on their egg color and have BCM and Blue together with one splash hen. SO B/B/S copper

directly from Bev Davis's Farm (minus my Splash Hen). So just wanted to say hi!

Vicki~ I did have one hatch I believe while you were out sick...all blue coppers....but unfortunately they are all clean legged with the exception of 3 that are pure Davis birds...they have wonderfully feathered shanks and are all blue coppers as well and I believe that 2 of them are pullets and one is a cockerel. The pullets I will keep and I will rehome the male if he doesn't seem to be a keeper by about 6-8 weeks old.

Its always interesting to see which ones of mine throw feathered legs and which ones don't. I'm learning lots about my different pens and which pairings get me in the direction I'm wanting to go. There is no doubt that there can be a steep learning curve on the Marans. Probably just one of the many reasons I love them. I love the challenge.

I just did a chicky collection from the hatching tray and have quite the sea of beauties! So far I've taken out 31 dry babies and have about 10 drying in the tray and more in various stages of pipping. I'll have to get a pic later when they are all dried and hatched out so you can see what I see....They are quite the fatties!

I've got 5 Blue Birchens out so far from my shipped eggs, and more drying. I also have 4 of those lavender Silver Sussex hatched, but still drying. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying for a good hatching from my shipped eggs. I'm getting great hatches from my own pens as well, I feel so lucky that its going well so far...I just wanna keep it going til this hatch is done. I've been waiting for this hatch since the day I ordered my eggs!

Congrats on your hatch! That's lot's o babies!

The clean legged chicks happened on purpose....they were all from my boy Bill who is clean legged. I was hoping for atleast one to have some feathering like her momma but....no such luck. They will be sold as regular old layers and bonus for the person who gets surprize dark eggs when it is time for them to start laying.

No joke on the pneumonia! It has been ridiculous this year with the weather. It frosted here this morning as well. I'm so far behind on planting in the garden, I've got just my garlic, purple onions, and red romaine and black seeded simpson lettuce in so far. We got hit with lots of ran and strong winds which held me off from planting, and then I got sick...I'm thankful I have my greenhouse where my little seedlings I started can hang out and wait for a good day. I'm thinking my cole crops might go in today if I can swing it. It might help me be distracted from my chicks hatching. At least I won't have to worry too much about the frost with these crops so far. I'm thinking I should be able to get quite a few seeds in the ground as well. And....maybe get the rest of the garden tilled as well. So far I just have a small section done. Yarg.....time to put it in overdrive and plant, plant, plant!!!!

It'll be really interesting to see what comes out of your hatching experiment indeed! What kind of incubator are you using again? Have you candled your eggs yet to see how the development is going at that humidity level? Good Luck !!!!!!

Haha...that would be an awesome surprise to get nice dark eggs from a layer I had bought!

I'm gonna head out to get some planting done and see if I can get some sort of semblance of a garden going....it must get done! That's my motto today!

Hopefully pics will also get taken of chickers in their various age groups as well. I'm so behind!!!!!!!

Vicki,

I am using a King Suro 20 incubator. It's pretty much a plug n play model, sort of like the Brinsea, with auto humidity and turning, with digital readouts. I've tried candling, but I really need to buy a higher lumen flashlight to see anything, this LED isn't cutting through the darker shells. Guess I'll have to break down and buy a Surefire with 1200 lumens!
