Debbi will tell you that Bill is part turkey.

I don't know why he is so big....but I couldn't be happier with his size and how it transfers to his offspring. He really helps put the width and size back into this breed. I am having a super time experimenting with him over select Davis birds and I have been more than happy with the girls that I have that are from Bill.......if I could have wished for one thing different about him...I would have wished that he had feather shanks.

Glad that Dolly is doing good. Didn't you say that she is bigger than your RIR hen now? Hey in another month or so you should be getting your first eggs from her.

Yes, Bill IS part turkey!

So are Roy and Clyde. I was watching them yesterday out in the yard, and I just get soooo tickled when they start to run, especially viewing from behind!

Kind of like watching a Sumo wrestler run...I would imagine?

Thanks Don !
I know you're getting annoyed, but I really AM trying to learn!
Please bear with me.

Asking real people who KNOW is much more informative to me than reading the standards which require some interpretation, especially to a total newbie, who has no point of reference.

I don't intend to breed a "pen full of inferior Marans" - that's why I'm asking all these questions.
I want to learn as much as I can as my first Marans grow up, so I CAN pick the best of the best to breed - everyone else will go to the eating egg pen (or the eating pen.)

I really DO want to contribute towards breeding birds to the SOP, but I have to start somewhere...

(I don't know if this forum has the option, but you could always push the button to "ignore" me, if my posts bother you too much!)

So - that said - what are the correct proportions for a "wide chest and back"?

This is a tracing of my roo from above:

What are the preferred or correct proportions?

Debbi - what line are you really big/wide guys?
Maybe I need to aim towards some hens from that line? (or from you!!)

Cadeau there is a brand new SOP just printed there will not be another one out for probably 10 years if you plan on breeding you should buy it and read it I know that there will be no Marans in the book but the first part of it gives you those diagrams and terms and lots more. We all started someplace but I can't imagine breeding or showing my horses without having the rule book......

Thanks - I've had 30+ years to learn about horses, so my learning curve on the chickens is pretty steep.

Will buy the SOP and study that, so I'm not bothering you guys with stupid questions...

No don't feel that your questions are stupid, there are a lot of us just beginning and also trying to learn. The SOP is a great reference to, I still am reading and re reading just to figure things out but it is nice to be able to ask questions and see pictures(I learn best with pictures

everyone out here is great about explaining and trying to show what we should be working towards.

Cadeau

Please don't feel like you are bothering us! We all do well to help to improve the stock we have by asking questions. Folks here will joyfully and freely give you advice, or point you in the correct direction to get info if they don't know. We all ask questions. The only dumb question, is the one that goes unasked!

I am, for one, one of those who prefer a personal response, rather than to have to decipher a book.

As for my boys, they are Jeane/Presley breeding from a gal on here, Tannis. She got her stock from...wait for it....Don!
