Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Hens and Roos!

Lotsapaints - sounds like I'm in your shoes! Glad to hear things are going really well a year later!!
I can only hope!! (and wait for them to grow up!!)

I have two @3mth pullets - if I took pics, would you guys be able to tell if they are going to be on the wider side, rather than the narrow side?

To those horse people out there:
You know how those studies have been done to find out when each bone completes growing in the equine skeleton?
How about the same idea in chickens??

Meaning:
Is a wide bird wide from the day they hatch?
Or
Do they gradually spread/widen as they grow - and, if so, when are they "done" or when can you tell they're def going to be wide through the shoulders/chest?

Same thing for backs:
Is a long backed bird born long backed?
Or
Do they gradually lengthen as they grow - and, if so, when are they "done" or when can you tell they're going to be long backed?

Thanks! (bear with me!)

Just thought I'd post some quick pics of the newest chickers. Here is just a sampling of my fuzzies! There are BBS Wyandottes, BBS Marans, Blue Birchen Marans, two different blue project colors I'm working on, and my long awaited Lavender Silver Sussex!

just a few of the wee ones

for those that were curious about my Lavender Silvers. I ended up getting 6 out of 9 to hatch. The are the fattest and biggest chicks I've ever hatched! Here's a shot of a couple of them

I'm very pleased about this hatch...I've got some beauties! I just keep going to the brooder and fussing over them. I am in love with all of them!!!!

VC,

He's a nice looking boy, except for, like you said his comb. It's always something! As young as he is, he has lots more filling out to do. Love the tail set and the feathered shanks!
