Just have a few minutes. The width of back and length of back are all structural and will only grow to what they are hatched with. I would never try and determine on a baby chick if it has either. By the 4-5 month age you should be able to tell Width of chest and width of back and length. When you get a group together it is real easy to spot the narrow. Best advice for you still yet is buy the Morley Jull book.

Who is the best place on line to get this book from, I saw a bunch of the dealers were from the UK?

I buy all my old poultry books from abebooks and have never had a problem.

I just ordered this book from Abebooks this morning, I think I ordered the last used copy, $16 something with shipping. They had a few new copies left

What do you guys use to mark your marans eggs? I've always used pencil on all my eggs, but doggone it... the pencil hardly shows up at all on these dark eggs, and several times I have pushed to hard on the pencil (trying to get it to show up better) that I poked it through the egg.

I know some people suggest sharpie markers. What do you think?

Don't tell me this late in the breeding game that I am supposed to mark the egg and chick so I can tell which hen they are from. I have read lately here on BYC that posters saying they can tell which hen the egg and chick are from without marking.

I use Stabilo All pencils. They come in different colors like white, black, red, blue, yellow, etc and are for multiple surfaces and are easy to see on dark surfaces including dark eggs. I get them from an art store and are not expensive. Pretty much any wax based colored pencil will work (ex. - prismacolor colored pencils) just fine if one is against sharpies.
