On Don's behalf, let me state that he NEVER gets annoyed by questions, (and tongue in cheek ) however some do get annoyed by his answers

You better hope they do not put an ignore button or I would be wasting my time as everyone would hit that button on my posts. If you can find a SOP from 2001 go to page #22 and it shows the difference between a narrow back and what is wanted. Once you see some in a group you will be able to spot the narrow back because it will stick out like a sore thumb.

Your reaction is normal for most new BYC posters as you will think we are ignoring you most of the time. If you do not get an answer you can PM anyone and ask them specifically to answer your questions. I answer all PM's.

Thanks Debbi and Hens and Roos!

Just don't want to be a bother, but I really DO learn better from the pics!

haha Math - I come from the horse world where it is all about the angles of the joints and certain shapes....trying to transfer some chicken info into lingo I understand!!

Trying.....to fit it in to a chicken box (uh...trapezoid)!

Cadeau,

Remember earlier . . . I said in MY FLOCK - - -these two faults go hand and hand. HOWEVER, I can only go by the handful that I have raised.
Don ( Snowbird) has been breeding chickens a LOT longer than me AND raises more chickens in one hatching than I have this entire year.

So, If Don says there is no relationship between these two faults . . . I would trust what he says versus what I said

GENERAL FAULTS not specific to the MARANS like thumbprints, side sprigs, etc are listed in the front of the book for all breeds.
YOU can check out the SOP book from the public library. They had to do an interlibrary loan and get the book from another county for me, but it can be done.

Thanks Don!

I don't feel ignored, just felt some annoyance and didn't want to be a pain or be ignored later when I need help!

I've had 30+ YEARS to gather horse info, horse books, literature and learn what I like and what works for me....

But, I am only a couple months into the same for chickens....chomping at the proverbial bit to gather as much info as possible and get going!!

As you can see - I'm a part to whole thinker. I need to take things apart to build the whole, so am gathering the "small" details in order to build a nice "whole."

Cadeau, I have one suggestion for you, My favorite old Poultry book is Poultry Breeding by Morley Jull and there are a few on abebooks at present for under $20 with shipping . This book describes a lot of what we have talked about here on BYC and also gets into genetics.

oh - I'm not the one who was annoyed, some of the posts I received felt like the poster was annoyed!

No annoyance or anger here! Just a farm with some pretty horses and, hopefully, some pretty chickens some day soon!

Talk about learning as your babies grow up so many things that are talked about will begin to make sense that waiting part just about killed me last year. I grew out so many bad ones that I was thinking about throwing in the towel. I was learning though and now this year as I grow out better ones and hatch a few of my own I sure know what to look for and Don is so right if you only have a pair that compliment each other those are the only ones to test...wide hens make wide chicks I tried the narrow hen to the wide rooster and it helped the hen but not enough the other way around works better again I wanted to see for myself and the eggs she lays are dark and I have someone who buys my unworthy breeders who lay dark eggs so it's not a total loss. I find it much like horses all you need is a "blue hen" mare and it really doesn't matter who you breed her to her foals are nice..it's just harder to find than a hen's tooth

and I hope you didn't think I was annoyed with your questions because I wasn't....I've been test mating since last fall and figured out some things that I can live with and many that are culling points right away......I did have to grow out quite a few though to get my eyes focused
