Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Snowbird, I am not sure what you mean by "is the blade ok" We are talking Roo #3 right? There aren't any sprigs on it... It isn't the best looking comb though.

He doesn't have the color yet of the other Roos. His ear coverts are dark but do have some red in them (if you look hard) Feathered shanks are good.

I am not sure about his tail set.

Snowbird Oh gee, that first roo, I wasn't sure if those were white feathers on his back or not... they are? I was so focused on his hackle color I really missed just HOW MUCH white there was on the back.

You put that so nicely though LOL! This is so great, I am learning and seeing through your eyes what I would have missed or not realized.

The blade on the Comb is the back end of the comb pointing to his back. It just looks funny there and I can't see it that good and can't find my magnifying light. I think he looks very nice , good stance. I like the males that stand up good when they are young, since they will drop down some when they get some age on them. If you start off with young males that have a low chest wnen they get some age they will walk like a Creeper.

You might want to go out and check this male #20 and see if it might be a glare on the picture, he looks to have white in tail also, but this could be light glare also. He is a very nice type and I see nothing wrong with him if he doesn't have white. What line of Marans are these.

Germaine,

The "white" feathering may just be the way the light is hitting his back, I only see it in the one pic. Sometimes a camera shot will
really blow out the highlights.

Looking forward to the rest of the "Bachelors" (how many do you have?) ...especially the guy in the background of pic 4 of Roo #3.

Debbi,

I too am a chicken lover with Marans and I too was hit by lightning! SO this should be a small club. If you don't mind I will PM you sometime to talk. Let me know. I am fairly new here to the Marans groups, but am a friend with Wynette and have some of her birds. It would just be interesting to talk, if you don't mind.

I don't see any white feathers on either one of the birds photo'd.
The color that I believe you may be referring is called "flame" the two toned effect of a darker copper from the top of the head that blends into a lighter almost but not brassy copper, it is considered a "fault" I guess if you will, it like many other undesired traits can be bred out, it just takes time as everything does.

bigoakhunter,

Yes, I was hit by lightning back in 1990. My son and I went outside after a storm, watching the clouds move away, or so we thought. Little did I know, there was another storm coming in right behind that one. We were standing on wet cement next to a cistern. My son turned and walked back into the doorway of the house about 6' from me. All of a sudden, there was a loud crack. All I could see was a brilliant white/pink light, time seemed to stop, and I could not hear anything. Next, I heard my son, "Mom, Mom, MOM!!! Mom, I think you got hit by lightning!" His voice seemed to be coming from far away, but he was right next to me. When I came to my senses, we ran into the house, and every hair on my body was standing so straight up they hurt! My heart was pounding, and I couldn't catch my breath. I felt very warm on the inside. My brother-in-law is a cardiologist, and I remembered him telling me once, if your heart ever goes into an erhythmia (sp?), to cough really hard, and it's like a auto re-set for your heart. Kind of like a defibrilator. After a few minutes, my heart calmed down and so did my body hair. Evidently what happened, is that lightning struck the ground near to me, and it came up through my feet on the wet ground! Needless to say, both my son and I have a GREAT RESPECT for lightning! For some reason, I seem to attrack it. My home I live in now has been struck three times in the last 16 years, one being last year that fried my computer. One bolt of lightning, and it came to my house!

So when clouds start to form here, I'm in the house! We had a real doozy of a storm yesterday evening with lots of lightning. We were spared last night, thank you Lord! Don't know if I qualify for the "struck by lightning club" as mine was not a direct hit, but believe me, it was close enough for me!!
