Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

They are so cute on their first ventures. Keep an eye on the driveway though, it will look like forbidden territory to them, and they will HAVE to venture that way! Mine did about the third day out, and in my neck of the woods, it could be a huge, predator laden mistake for them! I listen now for the crows, as to how far off they sound, and call them all back periodically and give treats. They come, I give treats, just like a dog! They have all learned to come now when they hear: "here chook chook chook!" They all come a running now no matter how far out they get!

My little ones respond to "chikkie babies!" So funny to see Sherman, the big tough guy, running when he hears "Chikkie BABIES!!"

I just yell "girls, cmon girls" and the picture they present when about 50:ep birds come flyin/runnin. My elderly, they would be apalled to be labeled as such, parents think that is a hoot and snap pictures readily. Glad I can still entertain them

Debbi, really liked the blue roo in the center with the copper starting to come through. I'm assuming Pinks protege? I have six myself from last weeks hatching and am hoping for one similar to your guy.

Very pretty birds. I have 3 splash males and no girls so far LOL!
The splash pullet in your last pic has a lot of feathering on her middle toe you will have to pair her up with a male with a lot less feathering. It is kinda hard to get rid of that middle toe feathering.
I have one line of blues that it shows up in and the original parents had it. I am in my 3rd generation of trying to breed it out and it is still showing up here and there.

galavina: I am looking forward to seeing some updates on all your birchen babies and those lav silver sussex!! I bet they are really getting cute now!
My most recent blue birchen chick did indeed turn out male he has a nice red comb. I think the black one is male too but I can see he might have some gold leakage coming in so not sure what I will be doing with him now grrrr. The older blue birchen pullet still is looking nice. She is getting nice light blue lacing.

Hey Hey,

I'll try to get some pics for you soon. I've been going non stop...working two peoples hours at my first job, training at my second job and trying to get the garden in inbetween. I sure hope this all levels off soon. I'm exhausted.
The chickers sure are cute indeed. Its just about time to change to larger legs bands, so when I do that I'll snap a few shots. The sussex chicks are by far so much larger than all the other chicks in that hatch...its kind of comical.
So, do you think you have a pair to work with then on the birchens? The one with the gold leakage I would talk to village chicken about. He explained it a while back, but I don't know where at in the forum...but I bet he could help ya.
You'll have to post some pics as well of your sweet ones.
alright...gotta get ready for my first job of the day

Hi Everyone!

I am seeing tons of beautiful birds posted here in the last couple of days........OMGosh where did they all come from??? LOVING IT!!!!!! Especially loving seeing all the Splash birds, when I first got Marans a person could hardly find any photos or info on them. It makes my day to see them gaining in popularity.

My very first 2 Marans were Splash Coppers, both roosters of course and no females to go along with them.

Debbi~ They are looking good! Is it possible to get a good shot of JR's comb? I can't see it very well.

Thanks!

Billie has a mossy spot on her chest? First baby out of Bill with that...good to know I will keep my eyes peeled. Thanks.

I have a weird hackled Davis pullet that I am growing out. She has copper but it is only at the bottom of the hackle and just 4 feathers and basically only on one side of the hackle, but here's the kicker...the entire feather is copper...no stipes and just the 4 feathers. I'll try sometime soon to get a photo of her and maybe Don, Geebs or Wynette can give me some input as they may have seen it before. I haven't seen it before..she's also the low-low rider of the bunch, Geebsie would go ga-ga for her.

Did I hear LOW RIDER????

Well, friends, you know how the pics everyone takes of their dark eggs never turn out to show the true color? Well, yesterday I went out to take some pics of my BCM Roos and wouldn't you know -- when I chased them out into the sunshine they turned BLUE!
ep.gif
And, of course, the pics don't show the coppering in the hackles
he.gif
and they make my precious birds look all "scraggly".

I am so dissapointed that I just might not ever post another picture until I can post a better picture!
