Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am SO strapped for time that I dont have any yet! I own my own business and work 60+ hours a week, plus we have the farm to care for (30+ goats, chickens, pot bellied pig, dogs cats turkeys etc...) plus we have 2 boys ages 4 and 5...I dont know when I will get pictures.

The little one has been living with the month old birds at the farm they cam from. So she is in with the older one. She snuggles under her...The breeder attempted to let the hen who hatched them raise the chicks and she was not a great mom, so this was the only survivor.

She seems to be doing well with the bigger chick.

I had a 4 week old in with some day olds and they did fine together. The little ones would cuddle up to the older one like she was their mom! She was their older sister though!

Well that gives me hope for integrating Pip in with the others! I was really not looking forward to that transition. May start taking him out there to the run in his own cage, and let him sit out there for a bit of the day with them. I'll see how that goes. He is still a bit young to go out for good, he needs more feathers. Getting cool at night here, getting down to 49 one night last week. I'm hoping for a semi-warm winter this year so this next clutch can make it outside before the hard stuff hits. Wynette's eggs will probably be in the house till spring.

berkeleysprings,

I meant to answer this one the other day, but time got away from me! I have the same bator as you, King Suro 20, and so far LOVE IT! The proof of course will be in the hatch. So far it's like you said, set it and forget it. I set my temp at 99.5, with the humidity at 45, and up to 65 at lockdown. The temp has never waivered more than 1/10 of a degree, and the humidity has run (according to ambient humidity) between 45-49%. This is a MAJOR improvement over my LG!! One more week till hatch day, can't wait!!

Really quiet in here this afternoon ... I hope to get my incubator up and running to hatch my first marans ... really hoping it wasn't the BCM that cracked in shipping!

criker99,

I know! Feels like I've been talking to myself all day! What other kinds of eggs did you get with your BCMs? Was it a very dark egg that got cracked?

criker99 ,

Did you tell the sender they were cracked? Maybe they would replace them?? Too bad they didn't mark the eggs as to which ones were which. That may be something you might ask for next time, then at least you'd know.
