Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

They do look whitish but IRL they are very pale blue.

Snowbird. I really appreciate your input. I have no intention of showing, but I don't want to breed crap either.

The undercolor on this male would be some shade of slate, no one knows for sure as there is no proposed standard. Is the black copper female out of Blue Copper breeders ?

This being said...there are so many of us that hatch...we get SO many "extra" cockerels...why don't folks share more? Okay, I now I'm probably being naive, but what a neat thing it would be to post a few pullets, and ask the question: does anyone have an extra male they could part with that would cross well on these? Pop him in a box, mail him off...easy... sigh...

Don: I hear ya... makes perfect sense... A lot of ppl like me what something that resembles the standard... THere just simply ISN'T great showfowl in this breed out there yet.. I know you have to agree with me here... and like you said Don... Less that 10 percent of ppl on this forum will ever show the birds but it is still fun to strive for something resembling what the breed should look like. And at this stage of the game (ground floor) the world is our oyster. If you get something truley fantastic that the breeding results are spot on and predictable... please let me know because I will get some eggs/fowl from you... REALLY...(providing you ship) Please understand that I am only doing what works for me with what I have... and assuming that there are others.... (many) that are like me out there... as I am sure there are many like you as well.

Tomato tomawto

Hatching a bunch of shipped garbage is what led me to this method... I was tired of ppl not marking what male was with what female... How can you predict anything just having a mish mash of birds in a pen and gathering eggs... you recieve a dozen or two and you have not a clue in the world as to what will pop out of the eggs.. I have had good result in correcting as opposed to buying more "maybes" It is my way of avoiding being rooked by purposeful trickery or just simple naivetee... (try and control the outcome with even the color aspects)

No, she is supposedly pure BCM. The breeder has separate pens of BCM, Blue CM and Wheaten. My cockerel is pure Blue Copper

Wynette, The only way this would work cost wise if the young male was shipped as a Juve and you could ship in one of the gamefowl shipping boxes.

Don, even if was an older juvenile, say 20 weeks...I still think the cost of shipping one very good male, as opposed to buying eggs, hatching them, waiting for them to mature, only to find you MAY have one that MIGHT work is probably less expensive, in the long run. I could be wrong. I know, though, that I've let go of several VERY nice cockerels that I knew just wouldn't work on the hens I have, simply for that reason - but that were very nice in type.

Ya and shipping costs are prohibitive but I am not apposed to it.. It does wear and tear on the bird... I do like getting the juvies... You have an idea of what is there without monitoring humidity... (I am lazy that way)... I don't own anything fancy to hatch with like some of the folks on here.... Just a true BYCer... Nothing fancy... My broodies and my hovabator and a small brinsea... I think it is an advantage to me though... I have to control the environment because I have so little space... I don't sell eggs either because I couldn't guarantee show quality. Don I truely hope you get there because it would be a great trail blazed for all of us... I respect your years of experience. It would be truely heartbreaking to me to have someone hatch something that they were not please with... I would really lose sleep over it....

Sabella, I will give you some advice on breeding this BC female and get some Blue Copper young . You would want to use a splash male out of the Blue Copper for best results. I am going by what I know and not from any of the formulas out. Your male has some Mahogany on his back and should only be bred to a splash female to get the best results.

geebsie, I'm not sure I agree with your comment regarding Don: "...as I am sure there are many like you as well."

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN'S SETUP? Holy Cannoli!
