Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Something weird is going on here as the more I hatch the better the hatch rate. I have two more incubators left and I am done until Fall.

Practice makes perfect Don!!!

Don, are you using a Sportsmen? Was going to ask what you use the other day, but forgot. Glad your hatches are going so well!

I'm still reeling from looking at your setup - and the thought of culling 300! (And wishing I could come apprentice with you!!!) Do you deal exclusively with Marans or do you have other varieties as well?

AS of now have completely let go of everything except a few Welle, and a few large Brahma, and very few Barnvelders.

Wynette, I have several of the Sportsman, and in the past I have used one of the redwood ones to hatch in. But I sold my big hatcher I had with partitions to keep the different chicks seperated.

Jan, that is funny as looks like the first three hatches have a higher percentage of pullets. Looks like I see a few of your Creepers mixed in there also. I cull all the short leg ones because I like all the higher station Marans.

Send the creepers my way!!! I seriously only use a short legged male on longer legged females...To shorten the legs up a bit... I don't like Storks either...A medium station is a good position to take... Still love to look at my low riding fella though....

I find I hatch more females this time of year than in December... (I hatch for males then)... I know it is supposed to be 50/50 but I don't think it is quite... Glad to hear you have lots of girls to choose from.

I too am still dazed from coop envy... The barrels.. it mustn't get hot there??? I would think they might trap heat otherwise... I am just reeling at the genius of that setup... I have several barrels and I am going to make stands for them.. that is a phenominal way to save space... I will use em for my bantam breeds. You mentioned a spoon to remove eggs... Do you have a couple of other views of the barrel homes? Do you have a vent in the back for airflow???

I have a low ridin' cockerel that you may want. He is looking good but he is too short for my taste. He hatched in March. I am only growing him out to see how his coloring comes in...so far he is looking good, but I will not use him. You will go ga-ga for his shortness. I'll get some photos of him later perhaps depending on the time I get home.
