Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

To pair her with one that has All the black in the world of course... (ya work with what you got)... I have a rooster that is dripping with black that would cover all that up and then some... if she has type....is kind.. a good layer and A roundy shaped #6 or better egg.... and you don't have anything better... ??? Well throw the dice...

If you have a pair that is optimum... use the pair.

I just do not agree with this reasoning as there are better Marans available and why breed something you know is going to produce males with white in wing and tail regardless of what she is bred to, she will produce males with pure white feathers in wing and tail.

Even if she uses an overmelanised cockerel/cock?

tomatoes, tom aw toes. I have used birds like this because it is what I had and could afford and got good resul so I respectfully have a different view. Yours has merit also...

Ppl do what works.

Well shoot - I know next to nothing about blue coppers.

Hmmm...from the shot taken from above, though, it appears

(don't shoot!!) that he has some white feathers...under his saddles? If so, my "guess" would be that he wouldn't be the best one to use on that gal. But someone who knows blue coppers needs to correct me, likely!

He IS a very handsome guy, though!

The reason why a lot of new poultry people get out of the show poultry is because they get stuck with inferior fowl to start and everything they hatch is mostly culls. I would be willing to bet the average for keeping show poultry would be less than three years. I am not talking about BYC people because very few here will ever show poultry regardless of the breed.
There is nothing that is more of a downer than someone hatching a bunch of chicks that someone told them they would be show quality and they end up mostly culls. Thats all I will say, just do what floats your boat.
