I think someone has a greenhouse too.... not just a still.... ha ha... (there isnt a smiley for that one) The chickens are just a cover.... to explain all the manure... (more than one meaning here)
Always a party here on the West coast..
Who needs a friday!!! THANK GOD IT"S WEDNESDAY!!! LOL
Yep... all the sense has been plummed washed out of us all... Balmy 54 here.... Liquid sunshine again... Cant get beyond a 5 or 6 in egg color with such stressed and wet birds....it sucks!.... to the 10th power!!! I don't care what pen keep strategy you have....here in the PNW it is nothing but work to keep em high and dry... I will dig another trench to drain pen one... and fix a roof leak on pen two... etc... UG... I have a skunk skirting the place.... Gotta keep a watchful eye..It is only a matter of time... (before I shoot it)
Glad to see you here Ivy. Did it go ok with your storms?? No rain here lately, it's the heat and the gosh darn humidity, that fried my brain! That's MY excuse, and I'm stickin' to it!
We had quite a bit of rain, but the corn needed it. The wind was the awful part. 50 mph. I swear my legs were sandblasted from dirt and you-know-what blowing out of the pasture. My two sons were here and we managed to get a lot done. We all had dirt and grit in our eyes and mouth.
The best part is the grow out pen is now ready for some half grown chicks.
I was going to separate my hens and roosters. The hens are looking pretty beat up and the roos are all henpecked. If I keep loosing hatches, though, I'll keep trying and my chickens are going to look like a bunch of naked necks.
Morning/Afternoon everyone...It was a productive day yesterday and so far today...i'm sitting 22 birds lighter this morning...it already made a dent in the amount of feed I use plus made some money to cover feed for the next couple of weeks at least. Oh...and I marked some of my older cockerels from my first hatches for freezer camp. That will help. And I know that I still owe some pics...I promise...once I can keep playing catch up from all my extra hours at my jobs. I'm running on fumes at the moment.
I also have a question...do any of you have massive...and I mean...MASSIVE black copper boys? I have a cockerel growing out that is right at three and a half months old and I switched him to a goose leg band a couple weeks ago..and I think I am going to have to take that off soon because he is filling it out with his tree trunk shank already. He is a bit overcolored in the breast but he is losing that pretty quickly...otherwise he is a deep mahogany color I just love.
It always makes me happy to see all the pretty birds go to good laying flocks. This morning I finally got some planting in. Planted 27 tomato plants (17 varieties), 14 eggplant (3 varieties), 10 jicama, basil, cilantro, thyme, oregano, fennel, and other herbs. I'm also STILL harvesting asparagus like crazy...this is the longest season for them in years. I also harvested my first strawberry and it was tasty!!
I'm loving this break in the weather it looks like we will have for a few days. I'm so sick of storms and heavy weather.
My parents have bcms all the birds have feathered shanks. Why am I hatching eggs off their birds that don't have feathered shanks? Thanks for any help.
