Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Blue will not change anything except BLACK......the blue gene will only make what would have normally been black on a bird to blue and will leave the rest intact.....EXCEPT when a bird gets 2 copies of the blue gene (Splash) and then your patterns (copper) and blue are both effected....ie....copper will be interupted and will bleed through in flecks or randomness (because the blue gene is leaky) but the copper should leak through in the places on the bird that it would normally be (ie...in the males..hackle, wing bow, saddles and breast) and the blue will have been turned to the whiteish plumage with the random blue feathers leaking through out the body, these blue feathers will show up where ever they want on the bird and there is no controlling this.

Copper is not considered brown.....I believe it is considered red. Someone will have to confirm.....still very sleepy this morning and just took the first sip of my java. Ye ol' engine is still warming up.

Right! Covered.
Your melanizers are what take care of covering up the red (the copper hackles, etc.) in these "too dark" birds, doesn't matter the color variety, we can see too many melanizers in all of the color varieties, it will just express a little differently in each color (wish I had a very dark Wheaten hen photo to insert here for a visual). Too many melanizers will cover the copper in splash birds as well....but I normally only see this in the female splash birds. For some reason my splash girls are just as prone to being "too dark" like some of their BCM and Bl-Cpr moms.

The way that the splash (2 copies of the blue gene) works is so cool. I have got to get a pic of my blond hackled splash/super light blue boy. He must really be a splash then and not just super light blue. It looks like he's been bleached lol. He almost looks like a lavender with diluted buff hackles, saddles but he's not. Still debating about culling him lol.

I've got lots of chicks in the brooder.

6 out of 12 Olive Eggers.
6 out of 12 Marans.....1 BCM and the rest are blue.

6 out of 6 Barnevelders............4 girls and 2 boys. This makes Pink smile HUGE and do a little jig.

Gilavina~ The test egg from that Splash boy pipped but has not gone any further. I will leave both 'bators running until tomorrow to see what may happen, but I have a very sneaky feeling this hatch is over. Boy it sure is going to be quiet in my office when I turn off the Sportsman. I sure have grown used to its familiar humm.

maybe you'll be able to another test from him at some point. He makes me very curious. This is one of my only days off from work and I just got back from making a run to the farmers market, but I really do hope to get some photos today. Its too hot to do much for too long....so that might be one of my little tasks of the day....I'm loving some of the birds I've got going...I'm already worlds away from last springs hatch results. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some of the others I still have growing out. They are coloring up pretty nicely all the way around for my different breeds

I'm gonna get my sportsman going again today...after just a few week recess....just can't help it...got some shipped eggs to pop in as well as a few of my own. But it won't be too huge....at least not bigger than a tray full

It was laying on the floor in the middle of the coop. It must have been laid by my blue copper hen as she's the oldest (24 weeks? I'd have to look). The color is seriously lacking, but that's ok. SHE LAID AN EGG!! It is little bitty. Smaller than my Hamburg hen's.
