I am REALLY WORRIED about all this smoke and the chickens....

I am having trouble breathing and I am only in it for quick in and out trips...

I hope I don't lose too many. I've got 5 week, 9 week, 11 week, 13 week, 16 week, 4 month, 5 month, and over 1 year olds in this smoke...
I know a couple of the younger ones are sneezing and one of my roos is sounding hoarse when he crows. .. .

HEAT and SMOKE - - for weeks at a time ! Just terrible!

That hoarseness: I am thinking might be a symptom of the smoke getting to them. One of my golden cuckoo roosters is sounding hoarse when he crows and he kinda makes this hoarse panting like noise. I am worried about him. I put him under the water faucet and drenched him. He hated it but it not panting near as badly now. I am worried about my big fat brahma girls they don't seem to be taking the heat well and my ameraucanas never do well in the heat anyways and now its super bad.

Oh Lynette! I'm so sorry to hear about the smoke and the heat and how its affecting you and your birds. That's too bad you lost that girl....I know how much it can sting to lose one. I wish I could send some of this strange cold and wet weather your way to cool things off and clear the air a bit for you.
The plan was to get some pics of the birds for you last night after work, but on my drive home you could see a nasty storm coming in fast. I barely had enough time to herd all my birds back into their buildings and get them closed in before it let lose. The lightning was terrifying...usually storms don't bother me, but being in the middle of all metal dog kennels underneath some old trees had me ducking my head and resisting the urge to just run back to the house and hide. This morning isn't much better....raining off and on and just plain cold and muddy. my little sussex young ones are loving the mud..they are a mess!

Sorry to here about your lose also. I really hope you get some rain and wind soon to get rid of that smoke. Im sure that is really effecting them and you!

Lynette,

Can you rig up some fans inside of the coops that would blow the air out? Maybe if the coops were smoke free, they could hunker down in them? Just a thought, hope it clears up for you! When I lived in CA, we were constantly battling fires and Santa Ana winds. What a MESS!

Yes, fans might help, but I really don't know how you can best deal with the smoke issue. That's not one I've ever had to deal with, and I know chickens can be sensitive to smoke and airborn chemicals.

Pray for rain to put out those fires!

Thanks rain would be good! Math Ace you will have to do your rain dance again lol. They say on the weather channel it might rain tomorrow. Maybe I can rig up some fans in the coops tonight. I think we have 4 fans around here somewhere, I can at least do some of the coops then.

gallivina: Yes please send some cooler wet weather! WHat a crazy storm you must of had there. I worry about lightning here too. We have some dog kennels for runs as well. They work pretty good but yes they are all metal lol. I have shadecloth over mine for now and not tin yet. I lock them all up at night so my actual runs aren't as secure as they could be. During the day someone is usually home to watch them and let at least a few groups out to freerange.

I wonder how people in extreme south east GA are doing with thier chickens? That is where the largest wildfires are coming from. There are several others in our state too but not as large- all around us.

Glad I did candle. One was clear, one had stopped about day 3, and one was POUROUS and clear!

Awesome on the silkie eggs. I was bummed when more of mine didn't hatch. I still wanna get a lavender silkie! Speaking of silkies, I was gonna tell you that one of my partridge silkie girls went broody the other day right after I was whining that the silkies never went broody lol! That's what I get !!!

Ha! You just have to tell them what you want! I swear, my girls listen to me. Had no eggs or one for a few days in a row. Got them all in the run that night with some wheat bread, and told them, "now, looky here. We need some eggs for mama!" Next day, I had 4 eggs!

I won't count my Silkies till they hatch; you know how great my hatches are...
