Yes, that would be the infamous 5 point comb but remember the entire comb only counts for a total of 5 points in a show, one for each point, and a deduction of only 1/2 point for each extra or missing point. I think it was Ione that once said, and I'm paraphrasing "he could have no comb at all and would only lose 5 points".

The tail angle on many of my birds is 45 degrees or less and since they have such long backs it can look even less depending on how they are standing. He was standing spooked because I walked in there and caught him cornered in the duck house. I've added another picture so you kind of see the tail up a little more. Now when they are strutting across the fields, that tail is up and they are stepping pretty. I will say that getting a decent picture of any of my birds is almost impossible - they are all semi-wild.

Ruth, If you were ever to show your Marans please don't listen to someone that doesn't know anything about showing poultry. If you were to get five points off for comb defect it would virtually eliminate your bird from placing in a show where you had competition. Also the Judge does not have to place anyone first.

Oh Don, please know I did not say anything about placing or competing or certainly didn't mean to and I'm sure you don't mean Ione when you said "doesn't know anything about showing poultry". I've gotten in enough trouble with my posts and I'm trying really, really hard not to say anything controversial. My ONLY point, was that the number of points shouldn't be of grave concern since there is only a 1/2 point deduction for each point too many or too few. Of course a roo with a deformed or missing comb wouldn't show well and I guess it was my fault for using that wording.

I have a question for all the marans people out there. I started raising this beautiful birds this summer and have Black Coppers, Blue Coppers, and Blue Splashes. I also have Welsummers and EE. This has been the worse year I have ever had for sickly chickens. I built new pens and coops to start, and have had the hardest time keeping my marans healthy. The other chickens got a little sickly, but responded well to the medication, but not the marans. I have lost almost half my flock( 6 pullets and 4 roosters) to a respiratory infection. I have medicated them to the point of extreme, separated them from the rest of the birds, I have even gone in and cleaned and disinfected everything, including pens, coops, waterers and feeders. So, do the marans have a inclination to get sick. I really like these birds, but am really frustrated at the amount of time, money and everything else I am putting in to keep them going. These are all young birds of about 5 months old.

marans should beas hardy as the next breed ,as far as getting sick thats not often at all we have around 40 chickens includeing some were around 20 wheaten marans

littledel,

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Marans!

Hope it clears up for you. I would be curious to know what you guys keep in your "chicken medicine chest". What are some good products to keep on hand? So far, all is good with my birds, but I'd like to be prepared just in case! Also, it may help me and others to know where to get these products. Living in the sticks, some things (lots of things!) aren't readily available here, such as DE for one. I asked them about it in three different places now, and they all looked at me like I had 2 heads!

None of my marans have ever been sick. I've had some with injuries. One hen had her side completely ripped open about 5 inches. She had a huge gapping hole and I had to do my first chicken suturing arrrggghh. She never got sick from it though. With that many sick chickens and it not clearing up, I would probably take at least one of them to the vet and have them cultured to find out exactly what you are dealing with.

I believe if you cross blue to wheaten, you'll get solid blue and black birds. If you cross those birds together you will get some blue wheatens in the mix. You could also cross the blue offspring back to the wheaten parent, and about half would be blue wheatens. At least that's what the chicken calculator says. It may not be so cut and dry.

Thanks Bailey!!

Ruth, this male is very nice looking and can not see anything at all wrong. How is the white in tail feathers does he have any?

Hi Don - these pics are for you - we'll call it Anatomy of a Rooster:

Inside tail feathers - with feathers pulled back - all black:

His feet - they are slate colored so since the proposed APA standards are specifying slate he should be good to go:

Comb - Do note his eyes are not bright orange like most, they are a dark amber:

Wing - also all black:

Put it all together:

He is still young and has not gone through a molt yet.

Chicken arsenal: Well first line of defense is your feeding program... Mine contains lots of grains and dried fruit, particularly cranberry. I include a thick coating of spices including tumeric and cinnamon. I also use DE in it as well and some BOSS and Matzuri Koi food (not the cheap one but the one with fish meal).

I also use Vinegar in their water and I treat them seasonally with Ivermectin pour on. They get to free range when I am collecting eggs for hatching so that their fertility is at it's all time high.

In case of illness I keep Sulmet and Tetracycline for Cocci and such
I keep Blue Kote and Furizone for injuries (dog or cat attack)
I keep injectable antibiotics for bumblefoot or other and triple antibiotic ointment
Duct tape, sterile one time use scapels, rounded scissors, sterile saline, tea tree (very careful as it is toxic) and Vaseline.
I also keep rooster booster for chickens with a depressed appetite.

I keep a can of jellied cranberry sauce and baby food on hand in case of sore throat where bird has trouble eating.

Almonds and Garlic and whole cranberry capsules for serious internal repair.

I haven't had a lot of illness since I changed my feed regime to include nuts and berries and a lot less of the layer mash (about 25 percent or less)

My egg fertility is excellent, babies are very strong, and my adults are in fine health. They don't mob me as breakfast like they are dying from starvation and the manure quality... well it is amazing. Flies cannot reproduce in the manure and my coup is a haven... Until it rains... (WE HATE RAIN)
