Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Now I know what to do with my leftover koi food!!! I have a bunch left from when we moved here and something ate up all my koi right away. I was really bummed because some were really huge and very tame. I didn't know the chickens could eat it. I am going to get koi again but it will probably be next spring. My ponds are packed full of water plants right now lol.

Pink,
Where did you get your lactobacillus casei starter?
(When I googled it I saw nothing with just that strain of bacteria..)

I have been using archaeobacteria (Biozome) in the garden and compost piles...The chickens eat extra SCOBY's from the Kombucha and the fruits from the water Kefir we make, also the whey from the Greek Yogurt we make..(Which they get some L. casei in.)
However the straight up lactobacillus casei sounds like a great coop wash this fall when I change out the deep litter...

OK, OK yes ON is a probiotic freak..

One word of caution to people living in hot weather areas, Do not over do the Black Sunflower Seeds in hot weather, I use plenty in fall and winter but very little during hot weather. I up the amount when they start to Molt real good.

Snowbird: Chickens don't possess the enzyme necessary to process barley and it shows up and a nasty smell in their fecal droppings. It causes them to not process the feed other nutrients in their diet and leave a yellow mustard type smelly droppings that stick to their vents. They will not grow to full potential and are unthrifty.
