As long as I am buying the feed and putting it in the feed buckets...... my bird better not even think of caring what I wear into the coops. However the younger birds do love to peck at my pink camo boots.....I don't know why....they shouldn't even be able to see them....the whole reason I got camo boots in the first place.

I wore my leopard print pjs out to the pen to let the boys out this morning.....
My favorite speckled sussex cockerel was very confused.... and . . . kept tasting my pj legs!
I guess I looked too much like BIG speckled sussex rooster for his comfort.

It is getting really bad in chicken land when I have to stop and think about what I put on BEFORE I go out to let the darlins free range !

I think I would be more worried about the hen accepting the chick than the mites. The ivermec should take care of the mites, especially if you have dusted, too. I would be very careful introducing your new chick to the hen. I'm wondering if "the sooner the better" be best in order for the hen to accept the chick....just my rambling thoughts.

Around here, I never wear flip flops or open toed shoes. To many stickers, weed seeds, rocks or whatever tend to make their way through that kind of shoe and into my feet, so I like to protect my tender feet. I'm afraid if a rooster attacked my feet I would end up kicking him into the next world.

Heat index is 118 degrees today. Hubby, son and I have been picking up hay. Hot, hot, hot!

I posted on the Kansas thread about my hen yesterday. I was really worried about one of my fat marans hens. Son and I were working in the coop. I had just scooped up all the shavings and poop. She was really irritated with us because she wanted to lay an egg in the corner of the coop by where we were working. She kept fussing and fussing around, trying to scrape up enough clippings to make a nest. It was a while before I got clean clipping put down because my son and I were putting hinges on the top of the roost so we could just lift it up and attach it to the ceiling when I clean under it. Works great, by the way. Anyhow, the hen kept fussing around, bumping into our legs until she was panting and making a terrible noise with her lungs. I knew she was overheating. I had never heard a hen make that kind of a noise, though. She finally gave up and went out into the cool weeds. It was really hot in that coop with no breeze yesterday. Even with the doors, windows and pop up door open it was still hot.

Okay, back out to the hayfield...

I can picture that now!! Maybe he was thinking, "Ooooo BABY!" I'm almost afraid to color my hair again, Pip might really get offended there! Red Deb has lately gone back to old salt & pepper. Now I have to worry that the salt & pepper may get the attention of the possible, new Splash roo! What to do, what to dooooo????

I mean really pretty girl! Will get some pictures taken if this weather stops being so silly!

Oh Susie, be careful in this heat!! I hope you are referring to large round bales, and not bucking square bales?? I know, I used to do it myself some years ago, but now a days, that's why the Lord makes young boys! I have a pullet here that is the same way. She honks and screams like a goose when she gets hot. It sounds godawful, but she's been doing it since she was little and hasn't keeled over yet. It was 104* in the coop the other day when I was in there! I even had the lid to the outside nest boxes open, but with no breeze, it's just miserable. Need to gather up some extension cords and run a fan out there. Wish I had put electric in the coop!

Yes, we are bucking Small squares today, large round bales will be next. See? I'm back in cooling off already. We unloaded 107 and stacked them in the barn. I pull them off the trailer, Hubby and Son stack them in the barn. We are all just taking a cooling off break right now, then right back out we go for another load. I have a fan in front of the computer, which makes this a good place to stop and cool off with a large glass of iced tea. mmmmmmm.... feels good!

I don't have a fan in the layer coop. We have fans in the shop and the barn. Generally, since the layers are all free range, they leave the coop during the day to lounge in the shade. That hen yesterday was just having a bad hair... I mean bad feather day. She was going to lay that egg in the corner no matter what. She's okay today. I need to go check. I'll bet there's a dark marans egg in that corner of the coop!

On second look it looks kind of roo-ish. Gosh, that wasn't much help, was it? I guess it would help to know the age. An older rooster would be showing more color through the body, but if young perhaps not so. Some of the feathers are looking kind of roosterish. Depending on the age, the comb looks more like a hen.
