Girlfriend, this is FLORIDA. I wear flip flops 10 months a year! The cockerel bites hurt the BARE skin, espeacially if they don't let go quickly!

yes you have a point. It will be 90 here today in Vermont, and I will be wearing flipflops too.

I have a solution for those biting roos..... several of mine are in the freezer! I am however having a hard time a hard time paring down the roos, finding just the right ones to keep through the winter is proving tough. I still have 13 and need to get down to 2!

Right there with you on the roos ....

I still have.....

5 or 6 marans cockerels
7 speckled sussex cockerels
3 or 4 delaware cockerels

That need to be thinned down to one or two roos.

PLUS there are the 42 eggs in the incubator.... which means more cockerels are coming!

ok well my little lone chick survived the night and is looking pretty good so here is a pic of the little one. will try and put her (

Lisa ~ Man, those cockerel bites on the top of the feet have to hurt! I've never had a problem with my feet with any of them. Are you wearing brightly colored flip flops? I wear Crocs all year round, except for last winter when we had the big snows, then I wore camo colored boots, no problems. My birds tend to look me in the eye, all of them. It's the headwear I have to be careful of! That red bandana and my blaze orange skull cap in the winter are a NO-NO with Pip!

The rest of the gang could care less what kind of a fashion statement I am making.

Vicki ~ LOVE the color on that BCM boy!! I saw the top of a head of one of the Splash coppers in there. Nice blue girl!

Already hot here this morning, was 77 and humid as muck at 6:30 this morning!

Calling for 110* heat index today, with no rain in sight. Been going out to the run to hose down the coop and run, and freshen the water at least three times a day. The yard birds stay mostly on the front porch which is cement, or in the dust bath holes they've dug under the Catalpa. The worst time of day is between 3-7 when the heat is the worst. I feel so badly for them panting, but not much else I can do. They won't have a thing to do with a mister, and will totally avoid that end of the run if I turn it on, so then they either inside the coop or on the other end of the run altogether. Nobody has died yet, so I guess we will all muddle through.

haha....I wondered if you would catch that splash boy's head in that pic (comb's not too bad eh?). My original intent was to take pics of them, but they have recently taken great interest in the ladies and were running around chasing them since it had cooled off a bit. All I had shots of were these streaks of splash chasing after another streak of color. I finally gave up and took the pics of those more content to pick at some food and such.

I'll keep working at some photos. I took those last night over the fence, I'm thinking I'm gonna have to get one of the old metal milk crates from the barn and go sit in the pen with them to get some good shots. I've got quite the mix of colors and breeds in my chick pens this year...these oldest ones I've moved to the pen off of the barn where we usually put pygmy does when they are close to kidding. Its a longer narrow pen than some of the others, but it gives them lots more room for running around so makes it harder to catch a good shot. I'll get there.

Seriously not looking forward to this heat today tho. I'm dreading it something awful. I might have to try spraying down some of the pens so that the birds can cool off.

Galivina: It has always taken two crosses for me to get enough color in the hackle.

Mine don't usually bother my feet except for one wheaten roo named Sweetie Pie who is obsessed with shoes or anything new or different on the feet.
Once he is used to what you are wearing he is good but change it and he attacks. When I first got my hot pink crocs he went wild trying to get my feet but after a few days he mellowed out. Then after I got a nail in my foot and I forgot how he is about new foot apparel and wore this bright green and pink winnie the pooh sock under the croc sandal to cover my bandage. He went psycho trying to get that bright sock. Dumb bird!

x2 on the hackle especially for the females. I crossed a Bcm male that came from my darkest egg to some blue marans hens and the first female offspring had very little/hardly any copper on the hackles. The males all showed the coppering. The second generation female pullets are still coloring up but look to be an improvement.

As long as I am buying the feed and putting it in the feed buckets...... my bird better not even think of caring what I wear into the coops. However the younger birds do love to peck at my pink camo boots.....I don't know why....they shouldn't even be able to see them....the whole reason I got camo boots in the first place.

haha I promise while I'm on vacation I'll do small 'photo shoots' with those that want to cooperate everyday. I'm so glad that others think my some of my birds are good too....It can get kind of hard to keep perspective sometimes when seeing them everyday.
