Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have used all of those different identifiers at different times through my life...just depends on the quantity of chicks I'm working with at a time and how picky I'm being on my breeding set ups....I go through Smith Poultry Supply out of Kansas. They are a smaller operation, but they are really nice (I deal with them a lot at poultry shows and auction I go to) and their prices are not bad..in quite a few cases on the bands they are cheaper than some of the other places. They charge shipping based on weight and base fee to start with, so I usually with go in on an order with my uncle or my parents to make the shipping cheaper for all. So, if you can find some others around you that need bands too, that might be a good way to go. I've also used zip ties I've gotten from the dollar store when I've not had enough to make an economical order, but do like using the numbered spiral bands more than any other system so far since toe punches are sometimes hard to see from a bit of a distance.

The zip ties can be removed with scissors... Don't put them on so tight that they will grow into thier legs...but tight enough to allow for some growth replace again in a little while... I do both legs the same color if I am tribe marking... that way if they lose one..I have time to band it before they lose the other and still identify them... You can order through Wilco... they will get you what you need (or they used to) They may even have a few sizes on the shelf.

ZIP TIES - --
I had troubles with the dollar store ones staying on.

I got mine from home depot and have found some at Tractor Supply too.
They are in the electrical section of home depot.
I use the small ones on chicks and the bigger ones on full grown chickens.
I reband them as they grow.

Depending upon what they were using for breeding stock, it is possible to get splash cuckoos....seems odd to me that someone would be selling them at four times the price and not make sure they had dark chicks with the spots on the head. Or at least give a heads up about the splash mixed in there. Maybe that's just me

It's very likely, and I'm willing to almost say, that it's all completely my own fault... It's all just a big blur now...

Thanks all for the help, I guess it will just be a bonus surprise now and will wait and see as she grows!

One more Q: Do ALL Marans lay brown eggs?

I don't think its a bad looking chick at all. If it were me hatching out of my own stock, I'd be keeping an eye on it for sure. were they selling pullets for sure or just straight run?

good deal! I bet you will all fall in love with the Marans...they are just the sweetest things. I love how they talk all the time....especially when they get a bit older.
