Yes, we are bucking Small squares today, large round bales will be next. See? I'm back in cooling off already. We unloaded 107 and stacked them in the barn. I pull them off the trailer, Hubby and Son stack them in the barn. We are all just taking a cooling off break right now, then right back out we go for another load. I have a fan in front of the computer, which makes this a good place to stop and cool off with a large glass of iced tea. mmmmmmm.... feels good!

I don't have a fan in the layer coop. We have fans in the shop and the barn. Generally, since the layers are all free range, they leave the coop during the day to lounge in the shade. That hen yesterday was just having a bad hair... I mean bad feather day. She was going to lay that egg in the corner no matter what. She's okay today. I need to go check. I'll bet there's a dark marans egg in that corner of the coop!

You crazy lady!

I think I would've made hubby and son a deal. "I'll go haul in the round bales, you boys take care of the squares!"

Got to love automation! But I know how it goes any more, especially around here. Used to be, men and boys would be standing at your door come the end of May to get hired on for bucking hay. HA! No more. You can hardly find anyone willing to do it any more if they've done it before, and then the new ones are even getting wise! Been there, usetacould do it...

Spitman,

Personally, I wouldn't call your Blue Copper roo "mossy". Looks like he has some excess coppering going on, but he would help add some copper color to the the babies, primarily the pullets. I'd give him some time to mature and see how he feathers out after he molts, a lot can change. Love your BCM boy!! You can use him on the blue girl too. Nice boy!

So I was out misting down some of my birds and giving them fresh water and I noticed I have two more boys with birchen coming in. I'm gonna have to catch up some of them up when it cools down to get an exact count...but I'm gonna have quite a few to pick from. I'm ecstatic! Of course I have lots of cockerels, but that's totally ok with me. That will give me better odds of getting two that are of good body type, comb and etc! I'm so stinking pumped!!

I hope you have great luck getting some good boys, Gilavina.

Ivylady, it sounds like exhausting work. Makes me happy that I'm just a wannabe farmer/country girl.

I finished my chicken run expansion project, and Sue, my cockeral, has been with the seven hens in the main pen for more than 24 hours now uninterrupted, instead of sporadic visits for a couple hours at a time. My SLW is still being mean to him, even drew blood on his comb two days ago, but otherwise, I think he's officially transitioned.

I think my BCM hen has officially gone broody- she insists on sitting in the nest box all day, and has done so for 4 days or so. I am leaving today's eggs under her (except for the SLW hen's egg, I seriously doubt she's let Sue near enough to actually fertilize an egg), and if she actually stays with the eggs, I may put her in the time out chicken coop and hatch a couple eggs to give SIL who wants to start a flock. Honestly though, I suspect the hatching experiment will fail.
