Oh no! That's too bad! wish I had an answer for you why your hatches are turning out with cockerels.

Never thought about things in the water affecting the hatches...wonder if there's been a study done on it somewhere...?

I would demand an explanation from my breeding pair if that happened to me! Well, I don't have a breeding pair, but you get the idea.
My lone pullet was making sounds like the egg song this evening.

She's only 18 weeks old and fairly quiet. I sooo wish I had more room because I've got chicken envy from this thread and now I realize I cannot have just one Marans. If only my Marans' sister had not died so young...

There is no such thing as just one marans..... Maybe that is why the French spell it with an "s" all the time!

On the hatching front, Today is day 21. Two chicks hatched during the night while I slept....
This is a good indicator that my temps are right on the money and I may have the kinks worked out with the new incubator.

I did discover that if I removed the lid of the incubator to add more water during the first 18 days,
it would throw the t-stat out of adjustment by a degree or so. Then, I would have to spend the next 24 hours tweaking the temps.

Also, discovered that the position the auto turner was in would effect my temp readings.
When the egg tray was totally flat, I would get a different temperature reading then when the egg trays were tilted.

I am so thrilled this morning! Remember a few days back, I posted my old dog had a stroke, and lost all use of her hind end?? Well, all I have to say is thank the Lord!

Evidently, my prayers, physical therapy, and vitamin therapy have worked! She was so bad last week, I thought for sure I'd have to put her down. She had also lost most of her vision too, and was holding her head cocked. So, with an old Army jacket as a makeshift sling, I would haul her out into the yard to go potty. The first day produced nothing. The second day, she fianlly had a bowel movement. The third day she peed and pooed! That was good, as I thought her kidneys were shutting down. All this time, she was still eating and drinking, and I had to tote her water and meals to her on the pallet of blankets in the living room, near the computer where she could see me. I had started giving her 1cc of vitamin B-Complex liquid in her food. That afternoon, I noticed she was improving, and depending less on the sling. She still needed help getting up, but once up, she was wobbling pretty much on her own! Long story, semi-shorter,

, this morning I went to grab the sling, and when I turned around to her, she was standing! She looked at me like; "oh no, not that thing again!", and she WALKED OUT THE DOOR!!! By herself! She got about 10 feet out and stumbled. I went to put the sling on her to help her up, and she stood again, walked away, and went potty on her own!

She walked around enjoying the cool air and morning sounds and smells too. You could just see her almost say "thank you". Then I called her, and we went back into the house for her breakfast. Marans eggs, dog food, and a mega multi vitamin! She never lost that little spark in her eyes, and never failed to give me kisses when I'd come to her. I knew she was still in there. Thank you God, for giving me a bit more time with my old friend!!

I know her time is near, and she may not survive another episode like the one she had last week, but this was truely a gift. I'm glad I did not involve the vet until I had at least tried to work with her. She even gave the three Pink roos the evil eye yesterday when they got too close to her!

Uma is back, if only for a while....

Almost forgot! Another big THANK YOU goes up for all the nice rain we had yesterday!!!! It is so much cooler this morning, but the heat will return. At least we got some relief!

Lisa ~ Too bad about all the cockerels! Have you tried using another rooster in the breedings? Does it work the same for chickens, where the male determines the sex of the young, while the female decides the number?? Just a thought. You may have a roo-producing roo in the breeding pen??

Hello all. We are fairly new to the chicken family. We got our first flock of 9 last April and love it. We have been considering adding Marans to our flock and am a little confused. Is FBCM French Black Copper Marans? In my reading it appears there are Marans with and without shank feathers. What is the difference? If my son shows them do they need shank feathers?

Thanks

Yes! FBCM=French Black Copper Marans. The "French" in it refers to the feathered shank variety. "English"= clean shanked. Both of those terms now are pretty much useless, as ALL American Marans MUST have feathered shanks to be shown, since the American Poultry Association approval of the SOP for the breed of Black Coppers. The Wheaten variety is up next for approval. Welcome aboard the Marans train! Oh, and did I mention WE LOVE PICS!! ?

Can't be the sulphur we have the worst sulphur well water ever here. We drink filtered H2O but the chickens don't lol. I get lots of pullets...lots of roos too of course..but slightly more girls.
