The biggest sting HAS to be proudly posting those "Americana" pictures only to be informed that you have Easter Eggers and its "AMERAUCANA" !!!

Well said.
I am just starting with two breeds of birds that I really want to establish. I am trying still just to get enough chicks hatched to even begin to think about breeding them. I am still trying to learn and understand all I can about these particular breeds.
It can be a little intimidating to have pics critiqued when you are just starting. It feels like a sting even though it was not meant that way I am sure. (hasn't happened to me on marans thread....yet) I hope Donna sticks around too! She is further along than I am... I only have one marans chick so far! lol

Hey Christie, it still stings even when you've been doing it for a while longer too! But the fact is, it takes just as much care, time, money, and food to raise a good flock, as it does a bunch of culls. I'm very new to the chicken world, so I've had my eyes opened more than once!

Like I said, not all people want to show or breed, some just want some backyard chickens and nice eggs. Others want more, and while I will probably never make it to a chicken show, I do want to get my birds to be as close to the SOP as possible. Right now, I don't sell eggs or birds as breeders because I am not there yet. I do not want to pass on my culls to others who may want to show or breed. So to me, I appreciate the comments, it helps me to sharpen the eye on what to keep and what to cull. Got about 10 of them right now that will be heading to freezer camp when the weather cools! Then I can start over again with what's left, and now I know better what to look for when buying elsewhere. That's just me..

Hi Lisa,

There is a lot to learn here and as it is I am just getting my Marans and already figured out that one cockerel that I bought has got to go. The lady that I got my hens and a much nicer cockerel from, told me that as the season progresses that the eggs get lighter. She said after the molt/winter, in the spring the eggs are the darkest.

I was supposed to get two blues from her today but her daughter told me that one of the blue hen's eyes are having a problem. They are putting antibiotic cream on them now. They asked me to wait until Monday to see if it clears up. If it doesn't then I will wait for the next group to get some blue hens. I was really disappointed as I wanted to get them and then put everybody together at the same time since they are all about the same age.

An interesting tidbit. I used to raise budgies and would get violet keets. Breeding violet to violet does not give violet. The lady told me the same holds true for the blues.
She breeds her blacks to the blues and just keeps the darkest eggs. Now in the third generation her blues are giving her dark eggs.

Is it just me or did anyone else see where these were mixed breeds.
Both F2 cockerels are sired by one of Kens cocks to the F1 females from an Orp/Marans mating

Plus they have yellow legs which I know is a big no no!

All new marans Owners. I think deb hit is right on the nail. Even though some come across very ruff when they give opinions they do mean well. I am buy no means a expert on marans. I think we have all been in the same boat as every new person on here at on point in time. It is just lack of knowledge of the breed, but then again I think we are all still learning and will cont to do so as long as we all cont to give our opinions and knowledge to one another.

Just take it with a grain of salt and not let it get too you and learn from it. I can tell you I used to have some cuckoo's I like but found out I got stiffed for the price I paid since they had yellow shanks. With out people letting me have it i would have never know.
