Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you for the chart, Sorry for the misinformation.

I will pass it on to her.

black x black = 100% black.
black x blue = 50% black 50% blue.
blue x blue = 50% blue 25% black & 25% splash.
splash x blue= 50% blue 50% splash.
splash x black = 100% blue .
splash x splash = 100% splash.

In the black x blue will the chicks be male or female depending on the color?

In the blue x blue if I get a male splash then, the next step would be to breed it back to it's mother? or better to get an unrelated blue?

Sorry, it seems from the chart that I was misinformed and bad me for passing it on without checking it first re blue x blue. I really like the color of the blue.

I don't know if the feather color would make any difference or not. I have quite a few dark chickens running around here and just like the light ones they head for the grape vines or some other shady spot during the heat of the day. I put up misters for them last year and they stayed completely away from them, so I didn't bother this year. I go out several times a day to make sure that they have water; but, just don't disturb them anymore than necessary . Susan

No gaurantees on sex, just color expectations....

I've had hatches that were 100% males and I've had hatches where is was 50/50 males and females.
Sex is controlled by the hen.... and it unrelated to the color percentages.

Welcome to all the NEW Marans Friends!!!

ChicksterJo~ Her beak will grow back pretty fast...nothing to worry about unless she cannot eat or drink. I have an older bird that has a very long and extremely curved beak that I have to trim a couple of times a year. If I do not she cannot eat and starts to loose weight. I am amazed at how fast it grows back. Hope this helps.

Math~ I love Cracker!!!!!!
Besides the cockerels that you posted photos of....what other Marans roos do you have???

Nicalandia~ Great job on your project! Keep up the good work....isn't it fun messing around with them to see what you can create.

No big storm this morning but we had a really nasty storm night before last and again last night....this weather reminds me so much of spring weather we missed out on. Its bizarre!

I have culled quite a few birds so far this year too, but I always have been really picky about what I winter over to start my breeding season with the following year. Although this year I will be doing one thing I have never consciously made an effort to do. I am keeping 2 cockerels of several breeds and color varieties as an insurance policy. After losing 3 cockerels last spring before I had even gotten rolling on the hatching season really makes me want to give myself all the chances of avoiding that happening again.

Having said that...i am in awe of how many birchen I have running around growing out right now. I culled 14 cockerels the other day...all but one were birchen marans cockerels. I still have quite a few to pick from... two different breeding pens chicks...I am happy with how they are coming along so far, but know that there will still be tons to cull across all my breeds.

Yes, the avatar has changed, due to my big mouth!

I was on a Silkie thread for Partridges only, and the list owner had a white bird for her avatar. I asked her why? Then I started thinking, "well, at least she has the right breed!" It was time for a change, and I don't have any good Marans pics at the moment. Don't tell Clyde...

I sure hope this weather straightens out some, I'm already dreading winter.
