Well said.
I am just starting with two breeds of birds that I really want to establish. I am trying still just to get enough chicks hatched to even begin to think about breeding them. I am still trying to learn and understand all I can about these particular breeds.
It can be a little intimidating to have pics critiqued when you are just starting. It feels like a sting even though it was not meant that way I am sure. (hasn't happened to me on marans thread....yet) I hope Donna sticks around too! She is further along than I am... I only have one marans chick so far! lol
Hey Christie, it still stings even when you've been doing it for a while longer too! But the fact is, it takes just as much care, time, money, and food to raise a good flock, as it does a bunch of culls. I'm very new to the chicken world, so I've had my eyes opened more than once!
Like I said, not all people want to show or breed, some just want some backyard chickens and nice eggs. Others want more, and while I will probably never make it to a chicken show, I do want to get my birds to be as close to the SOP as possible. Right now, I don't sell eggs or birds as breeders because I am not there yet. I do not want to pass on my culls to others who may want to show or breed. So to me, I appreciate the comments, it helps me to sharpen the eye on what to keep and what to cull. Got about 10 of them right now that will be heading to freezer camp when the weather cools! Then I can start over again with what's left, and now I know better what to look for when buying elsewhere. That's just me..
