Ivermectin might be a good solution indeed....

don't worry...last year I didn't have the luxury of being choosy on the birchens at all...I had to just roll with the punches and hold over all that I hatched...which was 5 I believe...I lost one of them and so at the beginning of the year I was down to 4....so you will get there too. I just can't wait to have more people to talk to about them that are also raising them. I had thought about doing a bantam marans project but am abandoning that idea the cockerel I have is a total jerk...I don't keep mean ones, so he's going asap. Along with a ton of others. I am culling down pretty severely I've decided. I have all my birds (minus the youngest pen down on paper and am working on my list of ones to go. Either they will go to a layer pen, a friend's layer flock, or they will be off to freezer camp. This last fall I wasn't 100% sure what direction I wanted to go in for color varieties, but now that I've decided I need to make them line up with how much space I have until I can get the rest of my breeder pens set up.

That's pretty funny about your daughter...well...not really. The same cell phone fate twice. haha. I just downgraded my phone to something simpler because I decided I didn't really need all that technology when all I really do is text and make phone calls.

Hi Chilldood! Sorry to hear that your favorite bird was taken.

How is the fox getting in??? Is he going under the fence in the coop run? If so, you could trench the fencing into the ground about 12" and backfill. This should help deter any predators that want to dig or go under the fence to get into your coop run or coop.

Still think you might be drawn into the birchens? I know they need tons of work, but I think they are worth it

YES, I am still very much drawn to the Birchens. I La-La-La-La-LOVE THEM!!!!!

I had one Birchen Splash boy that came out of my Bill, but he thought it was funny to chase me up and down the fence and try to attack me everytime I went into the coop or coop yard. Remember Dale #88?? Well needless to say he is no longer with us, but I wanted to use him to see if I could make more but his nastiness didn't get him there.

I am on the look out for some.....I just don't want to get them from or by way of a person that is pretty well known for having them ( I will not mention this breeders name, sorry). If they come from said persons line but a couple generations removed or several folks removed I would definitely consider it, I just won't deal with said person to get eggs or birds. I wish Bev had Birchens, if she did I would be ALL SORTS OF ALL OVER THEM IN A VERY BIG WAY!!!

Good morning all

All this talk about mites and worming helped to remind me! I have been waiting for the weather to cool off some before I wormed everyone. Figured they sure didn't need another stressor in their little lives while trying to stay cool. So, Eprinex day is today! I used it on some of the boys this spring, and it seems to work well. My bald backed girls sure won't be hard to do!

Blue Butt figured out how to remove the aprons from the girls, the stinker! I mean now he will just go up to them and rip them right off!
ep.gif
The only one with her apron still on is "Miss Bossy Flossy"; she doesn't take ANY crap from ANY bird!
gig.gif
Funny thing is, she is the sweetest bird I own, and she actually comes up to me and waits to be petted. Flossy is a Roy & Clyde hatchmate, so that explains that..wish I had more like her.

Pink, I think Bev does breed Birchens?? In your case, are you looking for Blue Birchens? Bet they would be real pretty running around. Like you said, find another source for sure.

Mornin Kim!

I know exactly what you are saying about finding birchens and wanting to avoid buying from certain well knowns and wish I could just buy Birchens straight from Bev too! That would be a good, good day! I am working on the birds I do have and am really happy with the breeding pens I had set up this spring. The birds have improved in size and type quite a bit...but realistically know I have a tough row to hoe ahead so to speak when it comes to getting a solid line with the egg color and etc
