Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Now Vicki, I have to post my disclaimer here. I've only been in this for a very short time, so take what I say as you will. All I have to go by is what I've seen on the web, and what I have experienced here on the farm. Take it with a grain, or a pound of salt, I'm just telling you as I see it!

A true Blue Marans is a rare bird most blues are over melanized blue coppers.....best thing is to find a black birchen with good egg color and breed it in otherwise you will hatch out split males (1/2 silver 1/2 copper) since black coppers are a birchen just with the copper....... and I hope I explained it well enough. There are a few breeders with birchens that have good egg color and even type. If you belong to the Marans club it has breeders listed and you can get on the waiting list.....most birchens though need work on their size and egg color.....as you can tell from reading the thread breeding good Marans is not an easy task.

ok, does anyone have an opinion on which would be a better rooster barred rock or maran? i am having to part with on or the other. also why does my maran george not have a tail. he had on feather and its gone so he looks like a hen.

Well, you are in the Marans thread, so I'm going to say, Marans!

Do you want the rooster for the dark egg gene? Then go Marans. Do you want a flock protector? My Marans boys are all good protectors of the flock. As for the missing tail feathers, he is either molting or getting help with molting from one of your other birds, like maybe the Barred Rock roo? Hens will also pull feathers out of birds lower in the pecking order.

what about crowing? he has just quit, i have seen or heard him crow in a while. could he feel intimidated by the others?

You didn't say how old he is, but yes, he is probably being intimidated by the other roo.

Whoever I am having that coop / barn building contest with - - -- COOP # 2 will be finished today.
One more to go...... Dh and I will hopefully be done by the end of October.

We have some doors we have to build connecting the coops to the pens. . . . .. . . .
We have to anchor the coops down and dig some hardware cloth in the ground.......

Odds and ends will keep us working at it until the end of October, at least.
