Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

We ended up with the 2 babies, the other 3 eggs looked like they stopped somewhere around day 15 - 18 so not sure what went wrong but these 2 babies will help to see what the hens passed on and what the cockeral might be carrying as far as the comb genes. I will have to have DD and DH take pictures, as of this evening I am on crutches due to a bad sprain of my right ankle- torn ligaments earlier today when my ladder slid and I went down with it. Good thing it's a long weekend so by Tuesday I will hopefully be moving better

crazy! what's with everyone getting hurt or having weird things happen on here the last couple of days? I really hope you get some good rest in and are able to heal quickly! Leg and foot injuries are the worst! Did you read about Debbi's mishap yesterday? I about died laughing!

Yes I read that, I'm not a fan of mice and probably would have been trying to get it gone asap. At least I wasn't drinking anything when reading it!!

Too much work...missed a whole day! DArned if working doesn't cut into my chicken time!!

The mice and spider stories cracked me up. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all the supportive comments on my Splash Roo, Lil' Joe! He is a nice gentleman thus far, and watches out dilgently for his ladies when freeranging! He walked up the ramp to the henhouse crowing all the way, so I was able to get that nice shot of him. His girls are quite the beauty queens, (Eva and Zsa Zsa), and will toss thier hair over their shoulders and turn a toe out when they see the camera... Overheard at a recent photo shoot, "Is that my good side?", "Does my hair look glossy today?" "I really prefer the "looking over my back" shot", "What time is make up and wardrobe getting here?" and "DAHLING, you just look Mahvelous!"

Good morning all!

Hens ~ Owww!!! That had to hurt, hope you feel better soon. Stay off the ladder! Congrats on the babies!!

Vicki ~ Nice eggies!!! My favorites are the "shiney ruby" eggs like the two of yours. I get those speckled eggs a lot here, some from new layers, and some come from the hens every now and then.

Don ~ You do have a sense of humor!

I agree about the GS, all I can see is Welsummer there. Just me and my opinion. I may have some of the pullets with the "stupid combs" gone this weekend. I am selling them as "Marans Crosses", as with those combs, they are in my mind, indeed crosses. Breeders using other breeds to bring in color or darker egg color, need to be a tad more forthright in their breeding tactics...

Finally got to mow the grass yesterday, and weed whacked the run. A very hot, but peaceful day; no more mouse or bug stories!

Get to meet my new Grandson today!!

glad your day was less eventful yesterday! And you get to see family and a new baby today! Yay!

I'm thrilled at the eggies as they are nice and round and have decent color...something I can definitely work with. But wouldn't you know it...I've got my mind turning now on another project....yarg! I guess I just can't stay away from pretty birdies!

Nothing wrong with pretty birdies! I love watching all the colors out on a freshly mown lawn in the morning. Opened the garden up to them all, and they are having a blast. Some of the tomato plants managed to stick around, as well as some cayenne peppers. They are loving the maters, the peppers...not so much.

Now the Quaker Parakeets just happen to love the peppers, but not the tomatoes. Works out well

How many did you end up with then? just the two?

So sorry to hear about your ankle. Torn ligaments really suck! Been there. Hope you heal up quickly.

It was such nice cool couple of days here, the only thing I did was work on cleaning out some coops. I have a few more to do today. My garden is a disaster I should work on it today so I can plant something for fall. I still have hot peppers and okra and some herbs left and that's it lol.

Are you talking about pet Quakers or wild ones? lol. I have a couple parrots and little obnoxious jenday conure who is louder than the big parrots put together.
