Can I get some of those eggs???? I don't care if they are not SOP ish they are PURDY!!!!

haha Donna you crack me up. I don't currently have myself set up with the NPIP to be able to ship hatching eggs or chicks and etc. I have thought about looking into it more seriously over the winter...but I don't know...usually I never end up with enough time no matter what the season. And yes! I had to show the pretty girls...they just make my heart melt
love.gif

Do you have to be NPIP certified to ship? I did not know that. I knew some states have restrictions on shipped eggs. Where are you and what can I take a vacation near you to get some eggs

What is in Nebraska? Never mind you need to come to MUSIC CITY and feel the music of Downtown Nashville, TN.

well....from everything that I've heard about shipping eggs and etc....I just would rather have my ducks in a row than just do it and pay for it later. Each state has its own rules with it, but I do know depending on the state....both the buyer and seller can get in trouble. I think its fines mostly, but admittedly I have not read all the specific laws for each state....

I live in Southeast Nebraska...land of flatness and fields and fields of corn. Not exactly ideal for a vacation. I might have eggs here in the next year or two...right now I am determined to make sure they move in the direction they need to.

Mornin! and thanks. They sure aren't perfect, but they do seem to make nice eye candy! I'm hopeful for each generation to move more and move to the direction I'm goin for.

Good morning all

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Met my Grandson, he is so darn cute! Got a sign yesterday, that states, "BEWARE OF ATTACK ROOSTER!" Should've made that plural!
gig.gif
If Blue Butt keeps up with his attitude and what he did this morning, he won't make it to the stew pot, he'll be eaten alive! I was coming out of the run after letting the chooks out for the day, and there he was, flogging my big male dog!
ep.gif
The dog saw me looking at him, so he curbed his next move, ie, chomping the rooster! I couldn't believe he maintained his composure, but the next time it happens, Blue Butt may not be so lucky. Stupid rooster...

Hi and WELCOME!

Number of eggs is not suppose to differ greatly between these 2 breeds, but I can tell you that my Marans are better layers than my Wellies. Egg size isn't too different...fact I think that my Wellies lay larger eggs than most of my Marans. Marans are WAAAAYYYYY friendlier than Wellies, but that does not mean that Wellies are not friendly, they are, they just aren't snuggly birds. Wellies and Marans are both great foragers and the roos of both breeds are great protectors of their girls. Both tolerate the hot and the cold just fine.

as far as who is prettier....well each breed has their own uniqueness about them and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I will tell you that I spend more time staring at my Wellies then I do staring at my Marans, just something about a Wellie out glistening in the sun that entraps me. However, my Marans are my ALL TIME FAVORITE BIRDS...hands down- no questions and I think they are prettier than my Wellies because Wellies don't have a blue variety.

If I could only have one breed it would be my Marans. *But....I will say it's a good thing I don't absolutely have to choose between them*

I'm so glad that you got to spend time with your family and meet your new grandson! I also think that sign is appropriate after all the stories you've told about your roosters...and I wish my dog was that well behave when it comes to my birds. He is still in puppy phase and gets excited about all the flapping wings and such. I'm sure I'll work it out of him with more training, but I admit...I keep a close eye on him.

It's 57 here this morning and feels absolutely fabulous. I'm doing more finalizing on my pen plans since its starting to cool off...I'm going to see if I can get my birds thinned out some more and start taking a step at a time to get things ready for building. First will be to move my giant dog kennel and put it in a more efficient place. I use that for a grow out pen for chicks. It gives them plenty of room to grow out and keeps predators at bay. I might convert that to a layer pen however and then turn them out with the goats everymorning to the pasture. I think that might be a better use of my space. If all goes well I will end up with 13 new pens in a u shape and will get raised chick runs built in the garage over the winter and move them outside as I finish them off. I love reusing old materials I already have!

I really hope that my blue birchens are promising...each generation of breeding is better than the last and this year I have quite a few to pick from and will hope to have 2 to 3 breeding pens running side by side after some test mating in the spring.

If I get some really good progress going I might have some hatching eggs available in the future and once I sort out the whole NPIP stuff. I'm really waiting for my last batches of chicks to keep filling out and figure out which will make the cut. I do have this blue birchen boy (only displays markings in the neck so far)...he is a split for gold and silver, but as long as I pick proven silver girls to test mate with him I think it should launch me in the right direction for size and feathering on the legs. I picked him up yesterday.... hoooooolllllllyyyyy cccrrrraaaaappp!
ep.gif
I knew he was filling out nicely, but man....I carried him from the pen on the south side of the property to the north where the barn is...not all that far and my wrist was killing me by the time I got there. He is like a lead weight! I'm so happy to have that size coming out in my birchens
clap.gif
Oh...and the bonus is that he has really nice breast lacing and dark blue wings. Very nice!
