Okay... going back to look at the comb on the cockerell again. I'm still not sure of what I am looking for. In one picture where the roo is facing "away" it appears his blade is somewhat thick, but I don't see any sprigs or anything. In a couple of the other pics, it appears he has a "wrinkle" or something toward the blade. Is this what you guys are referring to?
I'm not trying to be critical... I'm just trying to educate myself.
Susie, In the third pic, where he is looking away, look at the end of the blade. There are several sprigs on both sides, and looks like one sticking off the very end. I tried to enlarge the pic with my computer, but for some reason, it became distorted and I saw even less. The carnation will look like a small crown on the blade, on some almost a complete circle of sprigs. His is no where near as bad as some of mine
, but it IS there, and it will pass on, even if bred to a nicely combed pullet/hen.

This is why I'm not keen on everybody and their dog doing these "projects". If everyone kept track of what they were doing and didn't sell them as something else, it wouldn't be a problem....but I have already seen the pollution coming from that in some of the breeds here on BYC. Just a personal observation.

That's how the Marans got this comb problem in the first place. I'm not against "projects", but I am against selling those projects when they aren't the real thing yet, and when people don't disclose it, or worse, don't even know what's behind it and what that will do down the road. I sold mine as "Marans Crosses", as with those combs, that's exactly what they are!

For me it's like when you see someone selling/showing Americanas, when you see someone advertising a "Maran" - buyer beware ....
Probably aren't the most experienced Marans breeder out there.
Ivy~ I don't know if this will help, but here is an example of some of the stupid comb stuff, sprigs and carnation. It has popped up in my birds after I got those birds from Florida last year.
Ok, so we got two marans. I was told they are both pullets. I know nothing about this breed. I am not breeding or showing, so it doesnt matter if they are standard to me lol, I just want me some chocolate eggs
BUT I do want to know if they are really pullets. One has a good comband wattles for 3 months. (were told they were 3 months and 2 months, looks more like 2 months and one month to me.) They came from a hatchery in Oklahoma.
What do you guys think. They are supposed to be French Black Copper Marans Pullets(the bigger one does also have feathers on her feet, but they may have been plucked and are coming in,.)
We'll call the big one chick-1 and the little one chick 2. Here are both of them
Back of chick-1
Side of chick 1
Front chick-2
Back chick-2
Side chick 2
What do you think. Pullets? What age do you think they are?
Thank you!
