the babies are doing good, in fact I need to switch out their light to a smaller bulb. They are getting some wing feathers in, so we now wait to see how the grow

yay for babies being healthy! I'm starting to feel much better that I decided not to do any fall hatching. So much to do here....its pretty much on my mind nonstop these days.

I wasn't really planning on hatching but this was the best time for me to run a test hatch as the kids chickens aren't separated into breeder pens yet. This way by spring I might know what direction I want to go

haha...I so understand what you mean. for the last couple falls I've been back in NE I've done fall hatches and seem to somehow spread myself too thin. I was in the same boat of trying to figure out direction and such....and fall hatches really work well in that and hope to do more in the future..just can't this year if I expect to get building polished off.

We built our bigger coop last fall- DH pretty much built it on the fly and only had to revise the roof, we ended up with a almost flat roof. A couple weeks ago he built in 3 wire cages on the back wall for extra space. Now DS(9) would like to try a different bantam breed to raise- the one he has now isn't working out to well- no eggs are being laid!

We are also watching the older 4 chicks that we hatched from a cuckoo Marans hen x blue cuckoo Marans cockeral- I am thinking we have 3 boys and only 1 girl....time will tell for sure.

That makes me wonder about 2 possibilities............Could you stretch inexpensive cloth on the outside of the pens that face the cemetary so they couldn't see the birds but the air would flow through? I usemy goodold zip ties for that kind of thing.....LOL Or would posting a friendly sign ( old piece of wood hand painted, drilled & ziptied on to the pen) on the outside of the pens that could be read from the cemetary side help. Maybe asking them nicely to treat your beloved birds with respect & kindness & acknowleding the interest they show in them????? Maybe I am just too positive. I never want to believe that people"in general" mean any harm.

I have had that green shade cloth up before and come home to it pulled away in spots and have had my neighbor to the east of us that they saw someone looking in. I just can't wait to find a bigger place where I don't have to worry as much about my pens being close to the property line.

Do you think you could put the cloth on the inside of the pen panels? My chickens don't mess with it.

I live in Canada. Not quite so letigious here.

I can just see some bone-head trotting into court complaining that he was attempting to trespass and got seriously zapped by someone's electric horse fencing!!!
lol.png
I wonder if Judge Judy would take that case?

Yes, unfortunately, it happens all the time! When that guy was stalking me, the Deputy that came out one night told me; "if he enters your home and you shoot him, make sure you aim to kill. Otherwise, you will be looking at a law suit!". I couldn't believe what I was hearing!! It seems in this country, that the criminals have more rights than the victims. Now, if Judge Judy was presiding, it may be a different matter, I love her! "You moron, were you breaking into her house at 2am for a tea party?? No wonder she shot you, you idiot! Get out of my courtroom!"

babyrnlc ~ Welcome to the Marans thread! There should be someone in here from OK, but right now, I can't think of anyone. Try placing a Want to Buy listing in that section of BYC. Or, check your local Craig's List, they show up there a lot around here. Are you looking for birds that will meet the Standard of Perfection, as in for showing, or do you just want them for their dark eggs?? Be specific when asking for what you want, and if possible, ask to see the egg color of the adult birds, or the egg shell color the chicks came out of. I sold three pullets the other night, when she had originally come to buy only two. I showed her the egg color the hens were laying now, and told her the eggs these pullets came out of were a bit darker. She loved the egg color so much, she bought three of them!

thank you. We are not showing or breeding (Dont want a rooster). We are just wanting dark eggs. We have every color but the dark ones. (We have a new hampshire that lays very dark eggs, but not like a marans). We looked on craigslist a month or so ago and because of our freak heat wave there were many that were not laying. We ended up getting a Welsummer (what we were told was a welsummer, i think she is a brown leghorn, we are waiting to see). We have a colorful flock and colorful egg basket, I think two of the marans would complete it!

Morning Everyone! Sweet Saturday at last!

Couldn't sleep so I have been up canning Black-eyed peas.....DH is already complaining about how hot the canning has made it in the house this morning. Wahhhhh.....waaaahhhhhh.......waaaaahhhhhhh, I say, but who will help me eat these peas?

Going to play outside today with my new camera and the Marans while I am moving chooks around to new respective pens for test mating. Holy cow, after my nephew butchered the other day I have all sorts of room and am saving all sorts of feed.

Got some really nice Marans eggs that I hope to be putting under a broody today...finally got 11 eggs. Stingy girls!

One of my Blue Copper Marans that has gone broody for the 3rd time this year and yet to be a momma is going to get to try her stuff out on these.

These are single matings with Gnarles and 2 BCM gals and one Blue Copper, wonder how many stupid combs might pop up out of these.
