I hear that! I have been trying to scale down before winter as well with some layers that I don't particularly need, would like to keep them but just can't justify it......so I ran an add on craigslist and am trading 8 very young pullets or hens and a rooster of the persons choice for a nice big cord of firewood. I posted the ad yesterday and have been overwhelmed with responses. Hopefully it works out....I would like to get my bird numbers under 80 adults if I can for the winter.

NiCE Plan Pink.... I hatched very few females this year, but a TRUCKLOAD of males.... I sold one Friday and one Saturday. Four more teenagers and three young chicks - all males - left to go. . . .. I've got a friend who won't mind finishing the growing and harvesting, BUT I would much rather trade them for something.....

I too was over run with roosters this year. I had 21 all the same age. It was crazy loud. At 4 months old I ran an ad on craigslist. Found someone to trade 2 roos for 1 pullet, RIR and Golden Comets. Not my first choice of chickens I think RIR's are loud for girls. But, at least I can get eggs from them. And peace has come to my yard only 1 rooster for 23 girls. He's a busy boy. I am only hatching out the eggs from my blue/ green eggers {Ameraucana's, EE's} and BCM. My roo is a handsome Splash Maran. As the odd girls will be replaced by the olive eggers and blue copper maran girls. My goal to produce pretty birds and eggs. It may take a few years to get where I want. But the need is here. I can't find good BCM or olive eggers local. I am not fond of mail order. I like to see the parents pix can lie

These are the eggs that my Blue Copper girl Ponyo has given me consistently for the last 6 days. I caught her on the nest today so I'm positive it's her. They're very glossy.

Direct sunlight.

Not so direct sunlight, sorta half shade half sunlight.

With an olive egg for some comparison, again not so direct sunlight.

They aren't quite as dark as the eggs she hatched from but I'm happy with them. She is from Monique's (ruth) stock, I believe the Blue Copper roo that sired her is from Will Morrow's line.
