Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The Barnie lacing sucked me right in....couldn't resist.

Wish that we had some Blue Laced sort of Marans. That would be beautiful...but such is life. I will be happy sticking to the Blue Copper and the Birchens (if they ever get here).

you mean rosecomb? At least I hope so! I hope you have a good hatch! Just remember I want to see pics of these blue laced barnies when you get them going!! I almost got into Barnevelders, but the Sussex won out...but it doesn't mean I won't add them in at some point if they have beautiful coloring like i think they will.

Yes...rosecomb...sorry! Thanks for correcting me.

haha no worries. I've saw someone selling wyandottes once that were all peacombed and confused the crap out of me. He was totally insistent that they were rosecombs. I think maybe he was misinformed and unwilling to entertain the idea he didn't know it all

I'm sure you know the type I'm talking about. Not that I was worrying about CPs stock at all...from what I've seen she's got something pretty great going there!

Hey, Karen - sorry to hear about your gal!! I've ever only lost one chicken to the heat, and it did happen to be a Marans, also a pullet, also young - probably 18-20 weeks as I recall. But with the number of birds that I have, I have to think it was just a fluke - I've had Black Copper Marans going on 5 years now, and that was the first one I've ever lost due to heat.

Hey Wynette,

Are the rumors true I hear that you are the person to go to for Silver Penciled Rocks? I'm having a terrible time finding them in Wyandottes that have any real size to them, so was wondering if you do raise them, do you ever selling chicks?

Sorry to hear about your pullet. I lost one just about 5 mos old earlier this summer due to the heat and smoke we had from nearby wildfires. She never gave any indication that she was sick or weak other than this one blasted hot smoky day then bam...dead! She was a gorgeous blue Marans pullet and it totally sucks!

That is music to my ears that she ships chicks too!

and ohhhhh yes those BLR girls I have from her need the wide load signs...they are chunky and definitely have some junk in the trunk. I love that and would be very sad if they were anything else. I look at them and my big butted Marans and just sigh with utter happiness.

You guys are the best

My Wys are molting so I'm not getting eggs right now.
I still think they need a lot of work though...trying to get consistent type,
good color, larger eggs...and trying to get rid of those dadgum split for single combs

You guys really should get chicks from Marquisella. One of the breeders I got my start
from had birds from her and the Foleys (not sure how far removed) and anything good
in mine are from the work these fine breeders have done. Hers are where I HOPE to
be with mine someday.

I know this is the Marans thread

Well, I pouted all day long, now I'm over it.

Those dadgummed eggs had better be there in the morning though, or all hell will break loose!

Now, with all the rain today, I got to thinking...never a good thing for me! I have always wanted to keep a pair (or two) of turkeys. Anybody have turkeys?? Any suggestions as to what the easiest/friendliest/best rate of gain/poorest flying breeds are?? This wouldn't be till the spring kind of thing. Can't imagine having turkeys in the darned house all winter!

Don't want to tie up the thread with turkeys, so if anyone has any advice, could you please PM me? I tried the turkey thread, but it seems slow moving, I don't know any of the people, and patience is not my best virtue!

Thanks guys!!

Heck Vicki, I was a mail carrier for 8+ years, and this is really showing me why they (the PO) is going belly-up. Really, 4 days from Texas to Missouri via Priority??? And that's IF they get here tomorrow. Too many big boys in the PO management positions that have NO clue what goes on with delivery or handling, and the word "service" lost it's meaning to them after 9/11. From then on out, it was strictly business, they made new and stupid rules, had no idea what the jobs entailed, and the customers ended up on the losing end! Seems they need to change their new, fancy-dancy web site, and upgrade their delivery times to coincide with their ACTUAL service these days! The web site said I should've had my eggs on 9/21, yesterday. OK, I'll stop now! So much for quitting pouting, now I'm ranting!
