I have found that my new incubator goes psycho anytime the lid is lifted, FOR ANY REASON, No matter how gently it is done!
This last time, I didn't lift the lid at all for the first 18 days. I piped in water to keep the humidity at the right level.
I also calibrated my hydrometer BEFORE I set the any eggs. I found it was 8 degrees off.
Then, I had to lift the lid to remove the egg turner and set the eggs for lockdown. The incubator went crazy for 24 hours.... I had to adjust the temps a 1/2 turn before they were back to normal.
I think this is where I lost the two fully developed chicks that did not pip..... The temps dropped too low for too long during day 19. Just lifting the lid to set the eggs cause the tstat to lower the temps to 98 degrees and it took 24 hours of bumping and bumping adn bumping the adjustment lever up until I was back to the 100 degrees that I belonged at. STRESSFUL!
So, Dh has made some adjustments and I am waiting to try it one more time.....
