so i have 3 marans roosters (and hens but they are not interesting). how do they rank. Poirot is from an exhibition bloodline. and the other 2 were eggs bought from My Pet Chicken.
These 2 guys are brothers and hatched....June?.
Poirot, its hard to get a picture of him with the sun hitting him.... he doesn't like me blocking the light. but this is the closest of him i got... pardon the few missing feathers... i have a lot of roosters and he is one of the top 5 ranked ones now. he will be a year old in March

I have found that my new incubator goes psycho anytime the lid is lifted, FOR ANY REASON, No matter how gently it is done!
This last time, I didn't lift the lid at all for the first 18 days. I piped in water to keep the humidity at the right level.
I also calibrated my hydrometer BEFORE I set the any eggs. I found it was 8 degrees off.
Then, I had to lift the lid to remove the egg turner and set the eggs for lockdown. The incubator went crazy for 24 hours.... I had to adjust the temps a 1/2 turn before they were back to normal.
I think this is where I lost the two fully developed chicks that did not pip..... The temps dropped too low for too long during day 19. Just lifting the lid to set the eggs cause the tstat to lower the temps to 98 degrees and it took 24 hours of bumping and bumping adn bumping the adjustment lever up until I was back to the 100 degrees that I belonged at. STRESSFUL!
So, Dh has made some adjustments and I am waiting to try it one more time.....

This is really depressing to me as I have been watching this thread and I have eggs in the incubator off ebay from a guy named Dave who will not answer my emails when I have asked for his NPIP # and more information on my eggs breeding background. He had advertised them as Wade Jeane line. The picture of his birds looked good but after listening to this thread I looked closer at the picture and one rooster shot does look fishy. I paid a good amount for these eggs.... Is there anyone on here that would sell me decent BCM eggs. Would you PM me as I believe I will be getting rid of any chicks that hatch from these eggs.....
For those of us very new to this whole thing its very hard to find enough information to buy knowledgeably. I bought 7 Marans babies from a local lady. She bought her eggs off ebay for a couple hundred. I believe her and this is how she got her breeding stock. The issue is I bought 7 of her first babies from these birds. They are all clean legged. I can already see the comb issue discussed on one of them. Not one of these will be suitable for anything but laying stock. The boys will all go to freezer camp and the ladies will go in with my barnyard mixes in the layer coop. With just a half day of advertising she sold over 100 of these chicks. Simply because finding Marans around here is dang hard.
The chickies I just hatched I believe come from very good stock and from another byc'er which gives me a bit more security but before I can ever sell any chicks myself I will have to be sure I am not doing the same thing as the lady who sold me my first Marans. I don't want people to expect quality Marans stock and getting inferior birds. So now its pouring through forums and websites so I can make sure that I remove any questionable stock and find other birds to breed into these. Its a bit daunting when your setting out from the start to produce quality birds.

RedBug- It was pretty depressing to find this out! After having so much hope for this young brood. Luckily I do have others that are gorgeous. But now have no rooster and I'm out 3 beautiful looking hens. From now on "are these bird 100% Marans" And do you garuntee they come out with the right comb?" Are going to be my leading questions.
