How do you get the five kids to stay on top of the seven?

It must be quite a balancing act...

Kind of off the subject I just took the cutest pic of my daughter Adalyn and my nephew Ethan. He's practicing flexing and making the hulk face for halloween.

BROODIES - - -

I have some chicks that are 5 weeks old and their mommy is still going full strength with the mommy hormones. She doesn't want to join the other birds and totally flipped today when I took the chicks to the outdoor chick playpen area.
She ran around in a loud vocal panic. I eventually caught her and put her in the playpen area with the babies and life is all good again.

I don't want to rush her returning to the flock. She lost so much weight that she looks like something the dog dragged in. I am just wondering what the normal mothering period is ? ? ?

My light colored baby. This is the lightest of the bunch (also the one in the floor shot with its fuzzy butt to the camera).

The others decided that two pictures was all they were gonna hold still for. Maybe I can convince them later.
These originally started hatching yesterday (Oct 20). While snapping pics, two more hatched out giving me a total of 9 outta 12 eggs that went into lockdown, all Blue and Splash Marans.
Oh and everyone has a nice row of feathers on their legs.

I know there are at a least a couple of APA judges looking at this thread on occasion. I have a question based on some unfortunate judging that happened at one of the state fairs, no doubt, because BCMs are SO new to the SOP. At this point only the Black Coppers have been admitted and it seems the judges are having a heck of a time categorizing and judging them so what happens when Blues and Splashes etc., are entered? When a variety has not been admitted to the standard, how are they to be entered in an APA show? And how in the world would a judge unfamiliar with Marans, for example, know how to judge them?

OMG I found the prettiest Olive egg in the nestbox today. These are from my ameraucana x marans then crossed back to a marans hen. I can't even tell you how pretty olive it was. Way prettier than the pics. Just wait till I figure out which girl in that group lays it she is gonna get a treat!
This first pics shows the color pretty true. The others I took just for fun

There is something so unique about eggs. I never get bored collecting them and just marvel at the little packages of protein that a bird produces. And the variety of shapes, colors and sizes. It is so nice to feel joy about collecting eggs.
