Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey kim How do you cut and freeze your pumkins?

Anna~ I don't freeze fresh pumpkin....it turns into to nastiness.

But I do cook the pumpkin first in the oven and then I scrape it out and mash it and then freeze. I also can pumpkin so that if I am feeling lazy and/or forgot to take some out of the freezer I don't have to wait for it to thaw and I can just dump it in.

Sorry I'm alittle dense... do you cut it up and then cook it? Or just leave it whole. I've got the pumkins just sitting here lol do you do anything special with the guts of the pumpkin?

I give the guts to the chickens and the seeds I dry so that I can plant them again next year. However, depending on how many pumpkins a person is doing you may have a plethora of seeds and I don't know about you but I can't possibly plant all of them so I roast them and we eat some and I crush the rest and give to the chooks.
Yes I cut the pumpkin up into chunks, place them upside down so that the skin is facing up, add about 1/4" of water and bake @ 375 degrees until tender. Scoop out of skin, mash and freeze.

No problem and your very welcome.

I don't add any spices before freezing. The spices I add whilst cooking the chook gruel.

Good morning guys!

Had a really good sleep last night, and feel much better this morning, still a bit sore but much better. My old girl Uma woke me at 5am, urgently telling me she needed OUT!! So, out we go, then came in a went back to bed. Slowly getting around to things, may put the lumber yard off for another day. If I overdo it, I'll be down for at least 3 days. I'll have to see how I feel after breakfast and more aspirin. I swear all I dreamt about last night was the coop!

Yes, Bad Charlotte is one stubborn lady. Pip pulled a foolish and stubborn thing yesterday, and refused to go out of the run. Clyde only allows so many other younger roos in the run with him, and I could see before I even let him out of his night pen, that he was going to kick Pip's arse! Yup, round and round the coop they ran, Pip screaming like a little girl! I opened the door to the run for Pip to go out, and he refused. Ok, smart arse, have it your way. Soon as I closed the door, here comes Clyde and he jumped on Pip and wedged him in a corner. Pip played dead, so I had to go back Clyde off and rescue my misfit. I can't remember the last time I had to pick Pip up, but he was more than happy to let me. I could see in his eyes that he remembered the old days when all the chickens picked on him, and I had to come rescue him. No growling, no struggling, we just looked at each other and I petted and comforted him. Then threw him out of the run!

Bet he goes out this morning all on his own! Can you imagine what stubborn little terds I would have on my hands if I bred him to Charlotte!?

Vicki,
I don't know about the gold birchen mated to silver birchen thing. I hope you get an answer because I am now curious as well. I thought I had read somewhere that the silver was dominant over the gold..but not sure.
