Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi, I'm new here and to the FBCM's breed. I just got 4 hens and a roo about 2 weeks ago and was wondering if anyone can tell me if the hens are suppose to all have the copper color feathers around their necks? I have 2 hens that do have the copper neck feathering and 2 hens the are only black no copper what so ever. Could they not even be a true FBCM? They all have the leg feathering including the roo. Thanks in advance! Mandi:)

haha....I SOOO know how that feels. Both my brother's try to make it back to NE a couple of times a year...and when they bring their families its chaos...luckily they come one at a time...I would be in big trouble otherwise...That would make 14 people under one roof....no way! Glad you survived!

I posted a comment to you today...just checkin to see if you think you might make the show still? I need to look over my cuckoos one more time tomorrow. I haven't had a chance since I worked pretty much almost all my hours for the week between yest. and today, plus I worked all weekend. I'm exhausted. I have sooooooo much to do to get ready for the show, but I think I should be able to pull it all off! I'm gonna have to. The only thing I'm worried about is that a couple of birds I entered are showing signs of thinking about molting, so might have to scratch them. yarg!

I know... I wasn't even home when they showd up...I came home and there they were grilling burgers on my grill!
Yikes! I am still planning on coming to the show this weekend. Will you be there friday & Saturday?

I just killed a mouse! What the heck was it doing in my freakin house? Must be a cold front coming in!

haha I see they understand the phrase "make yourself at home" really well! Were you like what the heck and who is at my house when you pulled up?

I will be there friday, saturday, and sunday from when they open to when they close each night. Really sat is the actual show, friday is just bird coop in and sunday is awards and coop out...so I'd sat is definitely the day to go. Once I look over those cuckoos I'll PM you and let you know how many and etc. I'm torn about the cockerel situation because its lookin like all the chicks I hatched in that last group are pullets. I ran incredibly heavy on pullets this year for the cuckoos. SO, I might have to hold onto that older one. I just don't want to get myself in a jam if something were to happen to my main man Claude. I definitely will have some boys in the spring tho. never fear tho...Ive got plenty of girls no problem...haha I bet I hatched 80% girls, which is usually good, but I was hatching for good cockerels haha

I guess I should clarify....I did look over the cuckoo girls that I originally thought I would give you...two of them look great, one I'm not happy with. She doesn't have a good tail carriage and she just carries herself kind of funky. So, I want to look at the next older pen and see if I can find you two girls in there so there are 4 total. does that sound ok?

Isn't that how it always happens with my horses I want colts and get fillies... with my dogs I want females and get males. With my goats I was females and get males. With my cats I don't want any and get lots. Lol! Let's not worry about the cockrel until a later date... until you truely know! I think ill focus more on putting relic over your girls than starting completely over with my solid blue girls... No worries

ok....sounds good....so you want me to bring you 4 girls then? i think you will be surprised by the results of them over him. you'll have to cull carefully to select only those offspring with the best cuckoo patterning. id be happy to help when you get to that place

Gosh, you guys sure stay up late! I'm a 9:30, 10:00 person! I am glad you are back Anna, I hang out on here even if I do not write and I missed seeing you. I am lucky in that I live on the other side of the United States from all my relatives so not much chance of people dropping in here, and my husband family never come over. That said they will probaby come over now.

Show us some pics! And welcome to the very challenging world of BCM's. There is also a thread on the SOP, I just found out about it, just go to the search on top, type in "Marans SOP", interesting talk.
I belong to MCCA, and am still confused. A pic will get you an answer. I had a boy, was ready for the freezer...I listened to everyone here, and he got Best of breed last show. And there were 6 other birds, so it was worth it! Roberta
