Yeh, I thought there may have been a Birchen thread at one time, but haven't seen it in quite awhile. I know what you mean about following a bunch of threads, that's how I keep getting in trouble!

Get it together lady......first things first, you need to get that Splash roo, then we can get you a Blue Birchen male.
Heck, I just may as well get one in every darned color! I'll settle for a nice Blue or Blue Copper roo, one of these is already looking promising. Then, if I decide I need one, I can keep back a Splash at a later date. I can see a roo kennel in my very near future!

First and foremost I try to keep up with this thread...sometimes a chore in itself.
Then I try to keep up with the Welsummer thread, the Barnevelder thread and I always try to read the Delaware thread. I also am a quiet lurker in the Wheatens thread. It's all I can handle then my brain dries up.

Personally, I don't see a problem with having one in every color.
Babies came home from Aunty Lynda's (my bestest friend...she's the STUFF) last night, all are doing great. Just before she and her hubby came up for dinner last night and brought the bb's home one of Lil' Bill's blue chicks died. Lynda was crushed and didn't want to call and tell me....I had to calm her down because she thought it was something she did. She's awesome! But anywhoooo...all 19 bb's are doing great. Today they get moved outside to the big brooders. Ohhh and I believe the Splash is a male...of course.

So I'm wonderin... Is there anything to be done with the birchens with gold leakage on the back? Or would they for sure be culls?
And if not what would you breed them to?
I am just getting into Birchens, so I am not 100%, but in my mind I would say yes that something can be done about the gold leakage and yes they can be used. Just like selecting and breeding for darker or deeper copper in the Black Coppers and Blue Coppers. the Silver Birchens would be the same... but a person would select and breed for better silver. My large Birchen boy has some gold leakage......I am test mating him to a Blue Copper (who has very little copper...just a slight hue) hen that I believe may carry the silver Birchen gene, the offspring should be split for gold/silver.....I will raise up the best pullets that show the best silver coloration and the least amount of gold leakage and I will breed them back to their father to see if the next gen. will (should) produce even better and cleaner silver.
So after I said all this.....Vicki can come by now and correct me.
The first 2 are from acouple months ago $ the last one was a really long time ago but he's. Molting nw so hopefully these will work.
So if I bred this roo to solid blue girls would I get hens with heavy coppering?

Just goes to prove that university degrees mean NOTHING! At least, in my case. Paperwork with the Octagon 20 doesn't say my humidity pump is a gravity feed but I put it on the shelf above the incubator just for grins because of what you said and guess what????? Humidity came right up! (Who was it that said they were about to sign up for some science courses??? Maybe a bit overdue .... )
If humidity is still holding steady in the morning - eggs may be moved ....
AWESOME! Glad you got the humidity worked out!
Got 22 eggs moved into the Brinsea (including 6 BCMs that look hopeful and 6 Cuckoos, 4 of which look good. And, of course, the lone Silkie which required some extra padding around the egg in with all those big ones!!) Lower humidity level so hopefully some of these eggs that are actively growing will actually make it to hatch!!
The humidity pump is not supposed to be gravity feed but apparently this one benefitted from the kick start.
