Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

PLEASE everyone, give Don a break, he is trying to help us, and as soon as he tries to do something, we are nit-picking him apart.
If he walks away from his efforts, we will all be back to the beginning of this mess.
I belong to MCCA, and APA, and find all the standards very confusing, as well as hard to find.

Agreed!

I would love to move forward with this project. Not everyone can purchase a SOP book, though it list faults and DQ's, it does not cater to Marans faults specifically (or any other breed for that matter), a place where one can go to look at specific faults and DQ's of Marans with them....is a WONDERFUL thing IMO!!!!!!!!!!

I try to stay out stuff like this, but here goes anyway ....

Any time some one is willing to do something FREE to help out others with - there should be more support.
The only folks who should do the complaining are either the folks PAYING for it OR the folks WORKING on it!

This is TRUE with ALL things. If a friend comes over and cleans my house for FREE, I should not complain.
If my friend comes over and CHARGES me to clean my house, then I have the right to COMPLAIN.
If I clean my house, then I can complain All I want too.

Seeing as Don is doing all the typing, researching, and assembling of the information..... the comments and / or suggestions should be put forth in a manner that evokes more work on his part, not less.

Just saying... if you want something for nothing. . . then don't compain. If you don't like the work, then do the project yourself.
That is just the way I was raised

It might be why there is so much around here that I do myself

OBTW, I did start a thread on BYC for the marans standard. I think it is crazy to have to go off site to get the info to talk about on here.
I won't swear to it, but I think my thread includes shape information. I've tried to keep it updated, but if I am missing anything, LET ME KNOW.

Maybe it's just small time crazy old Canadian me but seems to me if we culled according to that list of faults and DQs, we wouldn't have any Marans at all. The perfect chicken simply does not exist and certainly not in a variety as new as Marans.

Surely we have to pick our battles and work on eliminating the problems a bit at a time?

We are not talking about doing a mass cull all at one time...we are talking about continued breeding and culling based on what is the worst or the hardest to breed out....then breeding again and maybe culling for that same thing or maybe this time something else pops up and we decided to work on that and cull for both at the same time.
It is a matter of picking your faults and culling battles as you suggested, but is all depending on what a person wants to focus on first and chip away at.
When you have elliminated the first fault or DQ to the best of your ability, then you move on to the next and so on. It's just that some faults and DQ's deserve priority culling and lots of folks do not know what the priority levels are. A list such as Don has suggested I feel would greatly support the Marans community. Knowledge is key.

Of course there is NO perfect bird out there....that is why we have a standard set in place...that standard is someone else's vision of what the perfect bird should look like or resemble as closely as possible....basically just giving us an idea of what to go by while striving to create a better bird from what we started with.

When I started with Marans......there was even less infomation out there then there is now and I would have jumped for joy to stumble across such a list with pictures.

With all of the dedicated folks here and on the MCC and MOAC working together, we are bound to make even bigger strides than already accomplished with Marans, a continued positive change for this breed, even if it is one little fault or one huge fault at a time. We are going to ROCK this breed of chickens!
