The baby is just getting some copper in his hackles... looking promising so far. I have a Blue copper too, but no copper yet and green legs

and no feathers on his legs

I think he is a cull

I have Eric in with my layer girls to keep him happy and Blue Boy from pinkchick is in with my breeder girls. I also acquired 2 Blue copper pullets too so we will see what happens with them. I will start hatching in late Jan.

yeah...i'd say that one sounds like a cull with the legs for sure. I'm hoping you will end up with a great hatching season to propel you forward! If you ever need a second opinion you know where you can get ahold of me!

Thanks you will hear from me again

yeah...that line in particular runs pretty small compared to any others I've seen or dealt with. Hey...did I tell you Kim and I both got ourselves on that list for chicks in the spring? I haven't been online at the same time as you for a while, but I have a feeling I may not have.

Yes I think you told me that in a PM. I need to get on that list as well. Maybe I can get some more good ones to work in with mine or just to keep as a separate line. What do people think of the greenfire farm silver birchens? My son wants to go over there and get some chocolate orps chicks. It isn't too far from here. I am thinking about getting some birchens there...

What list are you referring to?

and.....now I know what shrink wrapped really looks like.

I have heard that term and thought I knew what it meant.
This batch of chicks just keeps surprising me! I already had 6 hatch with the 6th one coming unexpectedly. In my inexperience I thought the hatch was over and failed to keep the water troughs full. Humidity got down to 40 that I know of. I came home from work today and found yet another chick zipping! Except something was different. The top of the egg was totally zipped but the membrane was white and very weird looking. After about an hour of checking and re-checking I decided to open the incubator. The membrane was like leather and the chick was totally glued in. I decided I needed to intervene cuz it was my fault for not keeping the humidity up. After much warm water, Qtips and tweezers I have a very sticky lil' wheaten baby.

Here is another twist... This egg was slightly cracked when it arrived. I applied a piece of duct tape to the crack and figured.."who knows?" So I suppose it is possible that moisture escaped from the crack?
Honestly I would not have even put this egg into lockdown but I decided to put them ALL in lockdown even the eggs that I knew for sure were no good just cuz none were smelly and I had the room.
So this experience has taught me that I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING!!

But hey... I got 7 chicks!!! woohooo!!!! Far more than I expected!

I had one zip on day 25 that was shrink wrapped and boy was he making a lot of racket PLUS he was upside down from how he was supposed to be AND of course it was 3 in the morning and dh comes and wakes me up and says I think you have a problem. I'm like that crazy cuckoo baby bird!! Like you I helped him out and that crazy bird is now known as 'Cuckoo Baby". I'm really glad I helped him. He has always been a little cuckoo lol.

Well I did get a couple of opinions about those other boys a few pages back now. Nothing really definative...so I will try with these two brothers.
again these two are supposedly about 1 year and are from Bevs line of Marans here in Texas. That is the beginning stock for the project being done over where we picked up these surplus roos... I would love to know which one is the better for breeding the other two are back one page # 2749 That was the first set of roos...I would like to know if ya'll could Evaluate these birds and tell me THE BEST out of them to breed or should they all be culled and the reason. You cannot hurt my feelings in this evaluation as I am learning. We are about to go see someone here in texas well known in showing these birds to get a lesson in breeding them so that will help. But doesnt help what we have already aquired. Thanks in advance for the help and please check out the previous post and feel free to evaluate those also although some thing number 1 Hector is pretty good? is his color to yellow?

ok this is the second set of brothers.

#3 frazier yes they are Frazier and # 4 Niles yes they are brothers and certainly are Playing at being french! lol

#3 Frazier... These two are beat up from fighting in thier previous home. 7 roos over ALOT of hens. Some of his comb is even GONE!

I NEED the information so I better Marans not harm them...

I think they are nice healthy looking birds.
I am not a Marans SOP expert. But i like to give my opinion :) Sinced you asked, here we Goooo....

What I like: (F=Frazier, N=Niles)
F looks bigger. Is that correct?
F better comb.

N like feather color, tail length and angle
N like feet color and feathering

Dislikes:
F & N eye color seems light (could be photos)
F feathers between toes
F light hackle color
F tail angle

N sway comb?
N overall body size (I like bigger, squarer Marans birds)

I look forward to what the real experts say....if only to see if I have learned anything during my crash course tenure on this thread :)
