I'll have to reply tomorrow, I'm way past my bedtime...

There's kind of something freeing when people are openly blaming you for things you KNOW are not your fault and are not true. Does that sound weird?

Anyways. Happy NEW YEAR! I'm so excited for this last year to be over and for the possibilities that lie ahead...particularly with the Marans...come'on Gigantor and Big Boy!

YeeeeHaaaaw!! Watching Daryl Hall and Smokey Robinson singing together! Two of my favorites together! I loved Hall & Oates, and Smokey & the Miracles! Daryl and Smokey together is awesome!!!

Hi,
It is difficult on this thread to see if the discussion is about the lady on Craigslist offering eggs or about Brenda Little. I will say this, Brenda breeds to the highest French standards in her Marans. A very nice lady, very knowledgeable about the breed and willing to teach. If a buyer is just starting out in the breed, they aren't going to get any of Brenda's LP line(her pure French line). She will eventually sell to the public but these first LP birds to go out ,will go to trusted friends who will keep closed flocks and the French genetics pure from US lines. I am not dissing US lines. Just saying ths is the plan for expansion of the LP gene pool. You can read about it on her website.
You might also try Karel Gray for BCM. Her birds are doing nice winning at the shows. Bethel Plantation isn't too far from you in general speaking terms. They have lovely line-bred Jesse Bryant line BCM. If you want to learn about the breed, Marans of America Club has a lot of educational opportunities. Esp. on their members only Premium Pages site, which features translated articles from the French Marans Club. If you just want a nice backyard flock from a more local source, which will usually breed true and give you nice dark eggs, try Bethel Plantation or Karel Gray. Their contact info is on the Net. All three of these folk have winning show records.

Hi Karen, This is an older pic of the father (Chocolate Chip) of the bird in question. His hackles are not overly light not too dark. They are fairly coppery I guess. His comb is large and too many points but no sprigs or carnation stuff and his chest is solid black. His back is way too short and his tail a tad high. He had his tail feathers pulled out and they are growing back in this photo.
I crossed him back to his mom (Cheepa) because she lays dark and has a long back and tail. She is dark but does have some coppering around her neck and has feathered shanks. She is a little on the small size overall.
I paired these guys up hoping to get a line with very dark egg color and am slowly working out the faults and trying to get them to meet the standard. Its kinda like going backwards.
I'm not really looking to show and don't sell egg anywhere. Its just a serious hobby and gives me an creative outlet from school and working in a high stress enviornment LOL! When it quits being fun I will find something else that is

It think I am just enjoying the birds and the process of it all. I will get pics up of the son as soon as I get a new camera battery and get my gh situated (just found out we are getting our first big freeze Monday night and I have hardly anything moved in there yet!! lol) He kinda looks like dad but more leg feathering a longer back (dont like his tail too busy) and he just has some glints of those shafts on his chest. He is way bigger though.

Debbie: I wouldn't cull a bird just on one bad trait UNLESS it was definitely associated with something bad. I really don't like side sprigs. I had some blue that the male had that hidden one down at the base of his comb and several of his offspring had them so I just didn't want to go through that again LOL!
