VillageChicken!!! Snowbird!!! Got something to run past you 2, where are you???

About the comb thing.............(no matter how many photos I took yesterday I can't get a clear shot so that I can post it so you can see it) yesterday as I was doing chores and spending a little time with my chickies...I noticed on the blade of one of the Silver Black Birchen chicks I have growing out that it appears to have 2 bumps, small bumps, one on either side of the blade. My question, when I get to it will pertain to these bumps.

Couple days ago I found one of the other cockerels from this hatch with the side sprigs on both sides of the comb blade......looks just like this cockerels.

See the side sprigs on this bird? Well the one I found yesterday just has small bumps where this one photo'd has the sprigs, it is so very hard to explain, but I just can't get a good picture of it.............my question is....are these small bumps indicators of the sprigs or are they sprigs that just didn't get as big as the other cockerels did?

If I were to describe looking at it.....it looks like comb on the above cockerel, but looks as though someone has shaved or sanded down the sprigs leaving the appearance that they were once there., so when looking at it straight on from the rear view a person can definitely see 4 little spots (4 being the 2 side sprigs and the 2 on the blade, the 1 above it and 1 below it ) on the comb that would look like this comb above but there just aren't any sprigs.

haha...that paints a funny picture...of you out in your yard digging through piles of snow looking for fuzzies!

I'm quite sure they wouldn't find the humor in it!

It's only snowed once so far this winter, and it was only about a 1 1/2" at that. They were NOT amused with it either, nor were the Marans. Those silly girls will literally scold me for laying down that hideous white stuff!

same here...when we got that first decent snow fall and extreme cold temps I got dirty looks like crazy!
I'm just hoping that this weather holds out...I'd rather deal with the wind over extreme cold temps and tons of snow!

Same to you!

Had a question for you inregards to your wine-bator- where did you put vent holes and how big? We currently have 2 chicks out with 4 more working on getting out. No Marans eggs this round- none of the girls are old enough yet!

H&R~

I put 4 holes that were drilled in using a 1/2 drill bit. I open or close them using foam ear plugs. I have 2 up towards the top front that I have found I leave open. The other two are towards the bottom back..

Good Job on the hatch!

Hey Vicki...were you able to get that article sent off to Math Ace?

Sure did...I forwarded it to her not long after she asked for it. She said she'd read it today. I still need to go back and do a complete read through. Hopefully with the decent night of sleep I got, it will soak in much easier!

Pink ~ I'm no pro, nor Don or VC, but when Blue Butt's sprig first showed up, it was just like you are describing. It almost looked like a pimple. Today, it is a triangular shape, and stands about 1/4" off the side of the comb. Like a little pyramid!

Is it too late to make this breed one that requires dubbing??

That kind of changes my mind...

There is interesting colors going on in there, they have a grayish taupeyish blackish color going on, a couple have the rusty brown heads and I think a couple of them are blue. When the last 2 finally decide to get busy and hatch I will get them out and get photos of them. Best friend hatched out a little Wheatens
roll.png
in her half of the eggs, I believe her final count was total 4 hatched, she only had 6 eggs make it to lockdown and one pipped and died and the other, last I knew still had done nothing. I am going to share my hatch with her so she has more than just 4 little New Years fuzzies running around.

Bill has never thrown a Wheaten...this will be interesting.
