Wow!! Congrats! Wheaten??? Really??? Somehow I can't picture Bill throwing Wheatens, did she get in any new stock?? Sounds like a bouquet of some colorful chickies going on there, can't wait to see them now and later on!

Pink ~ I'm no pro, nor Don or VC, but when Blue Butt's sprig first showed up, it was just like you are describing. It almost looked like a pimple. Today, it is a triangular shape, and stands about 1/4" off the side of the comb. Like a little pyramid!
Is it too late to make this breed one that requires dubbing??
JUST KIDDING!!!!!
I know it has to be the same as the full blown looking one that I posted photos of.....just wondering if it is a sign of something different.....like it can express in variations and if it expresses in variations what does this mean genetically? Would this be an indicator that it may be polygenic?
Heck I don't know anymore.........I am getting very tired of seeing them and I am getting very tired of the comb being the first thing I look at on them anymore...I would like to look at them and say "Oh that one is growing out very nicely and love the color on that other one?"
Not " Well wouldya looky there, it's another one of them F*$#G@! - _ _ _ _ - blankety blank blank combs!"
That does sound like an odd mix of colors you've got going. I feel like I've got something brewing up in the recesses of my brain that I have yet to put my fingers on..but keep getting a nagging feeling and am gonna need to decide exactly what direction I'm gonna head with my birds. One thing I know for sure is that I'm going to be thinning down pretty well to just the tops few birds of each color I raise, bring in those chicks I am on the list for and then do nothing but test mating this spring. I am thinking because I have boys from 5 places...that I will be doing a set of tests that crosses girls with several of them. I'm also going to be keeping a detailed photo and note log of all my crosses and hatches and results. I'm really curious to see what will happen. I'm not willing to just look at my birds and just hope they don't have things hiding in them. I'm gonna see if i can be thorough and test them to the best of my ability with what I have here and find out for sure what's going on. Then...I'm thinking the best decision I can make is to close the flock.

Atta girl!! Sure do wish more folks would do that! I have a feeling this is going to be a very good year for you in the chickens!!

I really hope it will be. I've seen so much improvement in 'building the barn' with my birds that it isn't something I'm going to let go of easily. I am curious to see what those blue copper girls I have growing out right now will produce. They are by far waaaay better than I ever expected to see...but really am captivated by them when I spend time with my birds... I don't know. I guess I'm feeling protective of them all. What can I say...I'm a nerd!

I have hatched a few Salmon Marans and they have the chipmunk pattern I have some too dark Wheatens and they hatched with a stripe down the back (faint faint) and look like Black Tailed Buff if you go to the Australian Marans web site they have chick pictures go take a look see what you think. I wouldn't cross them back to Black Coppers as they would probably hatch out looking like they have Wheaten characteristics.

haha true enough. I guess the way i'm figuring it is if I can really examine my birds through test mating and be thorough about it, then I will be able to really see what's behind them...and do the difficult task of removing any that fail the tests. I just don't know any other way around protecting my birds than to test from within and control who is introduced. It feels like its a crazy time with the Marans, and feels like its really the only thing to do... I would love to hear if others have ideas as well! Its just hard to know with 100% certainty what I've got til they are put to the test.
