WHOA! These girls need to wait until I have the breeding coops set up! I don't even have roosters in with a few of them....

I have a group of hens (without a rooster) who keep sliding up to the fence line to squawt for the rooster in the pen next door. LOL.
He was their original rooster and must still be their favorite

I had a different rooster in with them for a while. He had to chase them down to mate.

These girls just seem to have their own ideas.... They think they can select their own mate AND their own time to hatch AND their own eggs to sit on AND where to lay them!

SERIOUSLY, WHAT are these girls thinking? Didn't they get the memo that THEY ARE NOT IN CHARGE ? ?

Haha squatting by the fence huh? What little hootchies lol! I pulled that broody bcm girl off the nest again today. I think I broke the OE finally because she wasn't on the nest tonight. I took the other one's eggs 2 days in a row and does she care? NOOO she just lays another one and gets some of the other girl's eggs up under her wings jumps into the nest and sits on them!! This is the second time I've observed broodies actually pick up eggs. I have a little phoenix hen that actually got an egg and took it over the fence before I had it covered because I had pulled her off her nest in the woods and put her back in the run!! She had it way up under one wing...the wing pit.

Man I'm tired, spent half the day getting everything in the greenhouse, doing last minute repairs to it, and then the propane heater wouldn't light grrrr. Thank goodness dh is such a handy guy. He pulled it apart and fixed it.

I KNEW IT!! People think I'm crazy when I've said before I think that some of my girls pick up eggs and steal them and can jump up with them tucked away. haha Seriously...chickens are awesome little turds!

I'm glad you got your plants all safe! I wish I had a bigger greenhouse...mines just a small utility one I use for seedlings in the spring and such.

Do you get any cull wood 2x4's? Sometimes I find quite a few good over half-long 2x4's for .50 cents a piece at H.D. Usually Monday or Tuesday are good days to find culls because alot of people get thier wood for projects over the weekends. Sometimes these are untreated but okay for making coops or brooders if you are using them for the frame and nailing plywood over them anyways, then painting/sealing them with something.

Pink ~ Wow, I'm really bummed for you. Did you happen to get the Dellie from someone with Marans?? If she had the sprig on the other side, I would call that a Carnation. If these work off of some kind of a modifier, then it would have to go both ways...I would think? The least amount would express as a sprig, more would express as incomplete Carnations, and a lot more would express as what I have in Muttley??? That Attachment you sent with the Leghorns, there was the one pic that almost, looked like his comb. So now, I for one, am really confused! Gees, how lucky are WE???

Its true. I thought I was crazy before too when I saw an egg 'move' from one nestbox cell to another.

I found out they did that for sure when I had taken that little Phoenix hen from her nest in the woods and took her eggs as well. Locked her in the run and put her eggs in the nestbox and stupidly thought she would sit there on them. But nope she wanted that silly nest in the woods and I caught her hopping the fence with that egg up under her wing. I had no clue they did that!

I'm starting to see a pattern with combs that look very similar to this in different breeds. So far I've had it in my Sussex and went through the process of culling quite honestly treating it like it was sprigs...and have hatched two batches of birds and raised a hefty number of chicks and have had no more occurences. I will continue to do single test matings to keep on top of it, but this is starting to get crazy. There's Sussex, Delaware, Marans, Barnies...my question is where does it stop? Quite honestly...I'm stickin with the reasoning that so many people are raising breeds to sell because they are the 'in' thing right now and little work is being done to really cull heavily. I have a million things I think on the matter, but I'm sure no one wants to hear it... not much gets me really riled up, but...ta da! This is one of them
