haha that last pic threw me for a loop. I was so focused on looking closely at the boy and trying to figure out what the heck was going on with his tail that as I followed it up off his back my eyes did this

I'll see what I can find. The hard part about the reference materials I have here are all copyrighted...and birds I've had in the past are all immediately culled. I'll have to see what I've got in the group of girls going to my friend for layers. I had ordered some various wyandotte largefowl chicks and got some comb problems that I had to thin out. I haven't given them a good look over for a while...so maybe I'll have some surprises hiding that I can photograph. Otherwise I'll have to keep looking in on the internet. I'm not the best judge to say whether the invert/telescope affects one certain comb type more than another or etc...but I'll see what I can find for ya'll

well...I just had a thought....I suppose I could sketch some if I can find some time, they aren't as good as actual photo references, but better than nothing I'd guess

I can not draw anything!

HOWEVER, I do have all the pieces for my new brooder project in my living room. They are labeled with nice neat measurements and ready to be assembled.
They are predicting 3 days of freezing temps. I plan on spending those days WARM in my living room assembling the next brooder!

Reading about our comb sprigs @ the Coop it's just in the genetic background of our birds and our job to cull when it shows up. There were many birds DQ'd for sprigs at the first shows so if people haven't been culling them and since we all have problems just finding good birds and are mixing stock it is to be expected. Here on this thread we are trying to learn and are willing to show faults after we have been breeding them for years perhaps not as many faults will express in our own stock. Start mixing them up and voila faults will start multiplying and some people might be lucky and not have as many show up but they are still lurking in the Marans genetic background. Remember the strange Leghorn that Walt hatched and he's been working with his strain for way longer than any of us have been working with Marans.......

this one

Did you read this entire thread? This is a very interesting thread even though it does not pertain directly to what we have going on, but gives a great deal of infomation on combs and types and how they behave. I truly believe they are sprigs that we are dealing with that have variations and perhaps maybe another fault or issue as well. The first bad comb that I had pop up was "ingrown" or inverted as Debbi is describing...but it did come out fully when he reached maturation leaving the comb looking normal with the exception of the 2 lovely sprigs out either side. The others that have expressed in the birds I have hatched out have not been ingrown or inverted, just have the sprigs or signs of sprigs. Oh and I was wrong on my count of the birds that I have hatched with the problem....I have hatched out 5 Marans with this particular issue.....2 of them not being of my lines or from my birds. The other the Delaware hen I don't believe counts.

Ever thought about how hard it would be to breed out the combs on some other breeds of chickens?

Can you imagine trying to breed this comb out of it's breed? This is a rosecomb. (borrowed from The Coop from the same link as above)
