the top I have is a mesh wire hardware top with a metal frame that fits snug over the tray. You probably could make out out of a few different things...the main thing you will want to think of is air flow

Awesome picture Vicky! That is one BIG @$$ ROOSTER you got on your hands:thumbsup

haha...now you see why I'm so thankful they are sweet as teddy bears. They could do some serious damage if they felt like it!

After a few busy days I finally got out to the pens yesterday and had time to spend with the birds. We've been dry again and the mud had cleared off the shanks of the BCM boys. Very disheartened to see that everyone of them had some white shank feathering. It's all is in the same place, too. Left shank at the bottom. There's even one on one of the pullets. Anyway, the blue boy is the only one without white. Should I be in the market for a black rooster or should I breed my blue to black and use one of the offspring?

Hi, When you say blue do you mean blue copper or pure blue? If it is a blue copper roo then yes you can breed him to your blk copper girls. That being said, if the blue copper boy (if that's what you have) is related to the others then he may still carry that white feathering. You could try a test hatching and see what happens. If you still come out with some babies with the white in the shank then I would look for a new black copper roo that has no white and of course has the other traits you want.
You should try and keep your 'pure' blues, blacks etc separate from coppers.

Sorry, blue copper is what I should have said. Honestly, I don't know if he is related to the black coppers or not, but thought of testing him and trying to get a black copper rooster that will work. I've heard of too many bad stories about bringing in something from the outside and figured it might be best to see if what I have is workable first. Thanks for confirming my thoughts!

This is mossy. I suspect this will disappear as this chick matures.

Personally, I am a very finicky and won't use chicks that express mossy at this age even if it covers by the time they mature, but that is just me.

I wonder what everyone else does with theirs that show this.

Thanks Pink. Can you explain the term mossy though. I think of that as a greenish glean to the feathers -- but that's not what we have here. And why is it not a good thing?

I'll be sure to mark him/her along with the weak at birth chick with the yellow shank feathers. Well that's easy... of the six chicks, I have already culled two.

But a very good reason to hatch out MORE eggs!

haha...it is one of the best parts of my day, going out and watching them! Just wish the splash boy was standing like he usually does. Those two boys together are pretty impressive. They really are graceful indeed...I love watching them when they are totally at peace with life and are talking with each other.... Guess what!? My senior cuckoo boy...(used to be my avatar pic)is named Claude Hopper.

I'm gonna shoot for taking some more pics today. I have a few things to get done around outside and updates on my record keeping, but if the weather cooperates I don't see why taking a few photos would hurt anything
