Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

haha I don't envy you dealing with the dogs. Used to have male Rottweilers...talk about a handful during that time! One of them we got as a 2 year old. The people we got him from didn't want him since he had broken through doors, window, and various other things trying to get to a girl in heat. So I feel your pain!

I hope your shoulder gets better soon!

Thanks! Feels a bit better after I got out with the chooks, hauling feed. Nice day here, I can't believe this weather!! You know the dog is not being truthful with me when he tried to breed a cat, AND a rooster this morning!! Wish you could've seen the looks on their faces!!

The chicklets spent their first night in the coop with their crate door opened. No trauma, no one came running to me screaming, feathers all intact, so I guess they are now official members of the flock!

Took the camera out with me, and wouldn't ya know it, I forgot my batteries were in the flashlight for candling!!

Will try again later. Vicki, that one blue copper cockerel chick I told you about, is looking good, or should I say, better. He had what looked like what was going to be a carnation comb too, but when I checked him this morning, it looks fine?? I'm thinking the last point towards the end was folded over, but has since straightened out! His brother though, is still very much a funky comb. Too bad too, cause he's a very nice looking BCM, albeit with no copper yet. The Splash girl, Dopey (and she still is!), is looking good too. Won't be breeding her blue sister due to the funky toes on her.

Day 19 here for the 4 Silkie eggs, should start to see something by this evening. All my Silkies that I hatched before were rocking on 19, and hatched on day 20 and 21. We'll see...

Good...I hope it keeps improving....I just did something stupid, I don't know how it happened really...but I was walking up the stairs and all of a sudden I was smashed flat against them. Somehow I must have slipped. I spilled coffee EVERYWHERE and am pretty sure Im gonna have some nasty bruises on my shin, knee, hip and arm....

I hope that little boy end up being ok for you...can't wait to see more pics. I'm working up the gumption to go out and get started on the day. Right now I'm getting my notes together and transferring them to my notebook so i can have it with me while I'm working outside on my birds. I think its gonna be moving day for a few birds...I also need to change bands on some of the younger ones.

I've not really had the mossy thing here..yet. I've had three birds that hatched with a small round patch, all on their left breast area. How weird is that?? Two of them were the darkest, and still are, Billy and Olivia. The mossy went away by the time they were about 6 months. The other was a pullet that went to the woods of no return, so can't see what if any she would've produced. My problem here with color, is the lack of!

Well Vicki! I hate stairs any more, tough on the old knees. If you have any Emu Oil, try rubbing some on those bruises, it will really help take some of the sting and swelling out of them! I will try to get pics today!!

Some chicks can hatch out Mossy but it "can" go away as they age. I wait until they are a little older to determine whether they are keepers or not. Mossiness is also caused if the bird carries wheaten in the genes. This is not always the case though.

Working on Bantams right now as well and figuring out the genes they carry. Got a small wheaten pullet today so if I get the results I am looking for, some of my roosters I kept in the banties do carry wheaten causing some mossiness I am observing in some hatchlings.

thanks Lenette, I am feeling better...I have quite the bump on my arm that's turning black and blue, but other than that...just a bit sore. I unfortunately can only blame myself for the fall as I wasn't wearing shoes or socks. I wear them as little as possible...just don't like them unless I need them haha

Hey Debbi.... they messed up the weather forecast again....big surprise
roll.png
There is no way its gonna hit almost 60 and sunny. Its 40 something, cloudy and super windy again. Neither the birds or I are very happy. I'll still see if I can get some of my birds moved around, but we'll see about the photos. Its hard to get them if they won't come outside
