Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Very new to Marans...hatched out several batches from good breeders on BYC. I have read every page on this thread...the good the bad and the ugly

I asked a question about the odd coloring of one of my "blue" roos. he came from a super dark egg in a batch of BBS marans eggs. What color IS he??

yes... that is a blue birchen... a very rare find indeed... Nice looking rooster.

since Black copper is extended birchen and blue is off of that this does show up... Nice find.. I hope you will consider him though his tail is over the desired angle he so far is a nice looking juvenile.

Ok...that is good to hear. I could not find any pictures online of a blue birchen. Any major faults that yousee?

Now what sort of a breeding situation should I put him in?

He's got a huge crop, which is why I said it would be best to photograph him another time and from a better angle. One of my BCs does the same thing, but on a normal day he looks quite excellent.

OK, I went and googled chicken crop and look at images - - - that is the area that is looking strange to me.

The web site said squeeze the bird and smell it's breath and if it stinks then it has a sour crop.
Would a bird have a crop that big - - -normally - - or is this something the op should be concerned about ? ?

Illia, does your BC get a large crop often and how long does it take to go away ??

I would like to see another picture when the crop goes down - - - like a before and after comparison !

Any chicken can look like it has a huge crop if it has just eaten a lot of grain. That is normal. It goes away fairly quickly as it moves on down. Even runner ducks look funny if they have just eaten.

Well I must not have any PIGS in my chicken coop because I have never noticed a change in my chicken's crop. However, there are chickens in my PIG pen . . . That is where I free range by chickens because it is such a huge fenced in area.

ALRIGHT - - Goodnight everyone - - - I can't take any more learning tonight !

I will get a picture of his crop first thing in the AM when it is pretty empty, and put them together for you! He does love his food and he got alot of extra today, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, BOSS, bread & mashed potatoes in addition to whatever he helped the girls dig up in the garden, and their pellets. I am sure he doesnt have anything wrong with him, medically speaking anyway, other than being a piglet.
One thing I am not clear on is the how heavy the feathering is supposed to be on the feet/legs, I will be sure to get good pics of that too.

The other pictures on here are beautiful birds, I especially like the Blue Birchen...that is my other favorite color. More pics please!

Have you seen other blue birchen? i can not find info anywhere on them. I must be looking in the wrong place. How would I breed him to improve and get more?

Such nice conformation at only 20 weeks of age!

I really like the way his back flows into his tail. Since we don't have an SOP illustration
of the perfect BCM, we have to use our imaginations to picture one using the proposed standard
as a guide. This is my idea of what that looks like, only with saddle feathers colored more like
the hackles, slate legs, and a cleaner blade on the comb. Nice bird!...very nice size and eye color

.

As for breeding, use him with hens with slate legs...I believe the slate is dominate over white.
(That is if the proposed color standard of slate is also in the final standard). With his nice copper hackles
he should throw a good number of hens with correct coppering.

disclaimer: I am not an expert, nor do I play one on this board...

...I just read and reread the standards and try to apply them IRL.
