Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok if anybody knows how to turn off the ads I would like to know. I didn't know that you could turn them off.... no biggie but since I pay for it I would like to use it.

Vicki - beautiful eggies!

Gorgeous Birchen roo, new poster!!

As for hatching temp - I was just wondering about this yesterday (and NO BYC!)
During the late winter/early spring cold months, I hatched a greater number of roos.

Over the summer, especially July and August, I definitely hatched more pullets..

I did a hatch with my kids at school just before Thanksgiving and got ALL roos...

So - what is it?
The only thing I could think - are male embryos stronger and survive the quick cooldown of the cold weather better?

Or does male sperm survive longer in the hen in colder temps??

It's weird b/c my hatch rates are great...so not the incubation (Sportsman, other than school hatch was LG)

I open a second window myself and work from there. Easy with Windows 7 and IE9 with the tabbed browsing but it can be done with any browser.

Glad to hear you caught that light for the Silkie babies. I am in the process of attempting to wean my 7.5 week olds (Marans, Ameraucanas, 1 Silkie) off their light. So far, we are 2 for 2. 2 nights, I won (light off), 2 nights, they won (lights on - including tonight!!!) Those buggers can SCREAM. 10 - 7.5 week old chickens piled in a 1 foot by 1 foot pile is not a pretty sight and it isn't cold!!!! And the Silkie was NOT to blame. Ella was the only one actually removed from the pile in the corner and attempting to sleep.

I shouldn't have to open another tab, the way it was before, it automatically opened one for me. I have Windows 7. Seems they need to work out some serious bugs here, things are so much slower and harder for me now, so I'm not seeing an "improvement". Hate to sound like a whinebag, but the older you get, the harder it is to adjust to the supposed "new and improved"!

Even the smilies tell me "please wait" while it has to load...

Donna ~ Scroll down to the bottom of the page here, and look for the link that says "preferences". Click on that, and go to where it says, "see forum full screen" or something like that. Click on "yes". I'm thinking that would be it, but since I'm not golden, it doesn't work for me!

Hens/Pullets determine the gender NOT the roos. They seem to survive the cooler hatching. Pullets seem to survive the hotter hatches. I have not tested this theory. But I am going to try... worth a shot. It works in reptiles and somewhere down the road chickens and reptiles split... I can't help but remember the dino science dr saying just think of raptors as ANGRY CHICKENS.

Yeah that is what I thought too... it didn't really do anything... the thing to the side about breeds is still there and the couple of ads above and below. It is not a biggie... one day I may find it......

haha - oops - forgot that, Donna!

It's definitely true in reptiles- too bad we can't figure it out in chickens!!
